others included Royal Star. Studley Royal, and Lady Leigh. I Mr Gates was of very retiring nature I but in spite of his close attention to his various rural interests he took an active part in local affairs in the Ashburton district, and was never beaten in an election. He was president of the Ashburton Racing Club for some years, and also of the Tinwald Racing Club, and it is recalled that on the occasion of a dispute between the two bodies, the members of both clubs showed their confidence in Mr Gates by leaving the dispute in his hands to settle. Apart from his wide interests in thoroughbred horses, he was a very successful farmer. He bought the Mount Brown station in 1910, subdivided it and sold it in 1914. He owned Buccleugh at Mount Somers, and in partnership with Mr McGregor, owned Mount Linton in Southland, while later he had Clifton, Waikari. His latest farming interests were at Broxton. Stockgrove, and Swinton Park. Mr Gates married Miss Stone in 1898. In 1910 he made a trip to England. He made another trip in 1914 to send his only daughter, Miss L. Gates (who survives him) to Polam Hall. Yorkshire, and resided in Yorkshire for two years He made another visit to hie birthplace in 1923, -and his last trip was in 1930. Mrs Gates died two years ago yesterday, and yesterday was the anniversary of Mr Gates’s wedding day.
