ESTATE DECLARATIONS
Sir, —If I remember rightly, before the 1914-18 war, the value of deceased persons’ estates over a certain amount was published in the daily papers During the war the Massey Govern-, ment passed a law prohibiting the publication of deceased persons’ estates. —-Yours, etc., WHY? ■ May 25, 1943. [When this letter was referred to an official of the department concerned it was explained that returns for death duties are for taxation purposes only. The publication of the figures was discontinued when Mr Massey was Prime Minister.] UNCLAIMED PRIZES Sir, —Would it be possible for your paper to publish the unclaimed prizes of the recent United Nations Fair art unions.—Yours, etc., DAILY READER. Temuka, May 27, 1943. [The secretary of the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council (Mr R. L. Ashley) said yesterday that a list of all unclaimed prizes would be published shortly.] INCOMES Sir,—Your correspondent, “National Credit,’’ evidently doesn’t think there should be equality of rights, even at a time when we are being told that we are fighting for democracy. Perhaps he is yearning for a return of the days when union secretaries and representatives were not necessary and tyrannycould reign supreme again; or perhaps the “big bosses” at headquarters would like to see workers’ representatives facing a firing squad, for he is certainly not a democrat.—Yours, etc., DOWN WITH HOLLAND. May 30, 1943. [F. Sinclaire may, if he wishes, briefly reply; otherwise, this correspondence Press.”]
