WASTE RECLAMATION
Sir,—Some weeks ago you published an announcement that owing to the acute shortage of scrap cast iron, the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association ! intended to apply to the authorities concerned to have relieved some of 1 the heavy restrictions imposed on the normal suppliers of scrap metal (scrap metal dealers). Since that time neither the supply seems to have materially improved nor any apparent steps been taken filong the lines suggested. In view of the recent appli- , cation of this firm for some relief by way of extra petrol supplies having , been turned down on the grounds that ‘‘available supplies of petrol were required for more urgent purposes connected with the war effort,” would it be possible to get a candid opinion, say from the secretary of the association named, regarding the necessity for the collection and utilisation of scrap metal in war time, together with an indication of the present supply position as compared with what it was when normal collectors were free to operate.—Yours, etc., , H. L. HECC. May 28. 1943. [The secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. T. Alston) said that he would be pleased to discuss the question if Mr Hecc called on him.]
