VEGETABLE PRICES
Sir,—Now that the small market gardener has been threatened with extinction by the action of the Government in attempting to force growers to grow vegetables under contract, at prices below those during depression years, it will be interesting for the public to know some of the following facts. Government departmental officials at recent meetings held m Christchurch stated that the recent rise in the index of 1.1 per cent, was caused by the high price of vegetables. This may apply in the North Island. The price the consumer has had to pay is no fault of the grower; therefore, why should the Government attack the producer, who is never in the position to hit back? It is quite obvious that the real object of the Government is the destruction of private enterprise and the introduction of State farms. Yours, etc., MA^KET GARDENER. May 31, 1943.
