HIGHER WAR EXPENSE COLLECTIONS

REDUCED SALES TAX RETURNS CHRISTCHURCH CUSTOMS FIGURES Except in the war expenses section of the customs collections in Christchurch for the month of May, the amounts are smaller than for the same month last year. War expenses increased from £81,432 to £118,192 in the month just ended: for the two months of the financial year so far the Increase in the war expenses collections were from £133,711 to £243.500. For the two months of this year, customs collections declined by £25,160 and sales tax by £18,034. Customs revenue, however, showed a decrease of £28,345, while the amounts collected in excise on beer and sales tax were also lower than for the corresponding period of 1942. The figures for the month, with those for May. 1942, in parenthesis,- are: Customs, £187.727 (£216,072); excise on beer, £22,961 (£29,239); sales tax, £98.369 (£110,826): war expenses account, £276,012 (£170,916). WELLINGTON Customs revenue collected at Wellington this month, followed by the figures for May, 1942, is; Net customs, £275,891 (£269,245); sales tax, £92,287 (£101,395); beer excise, £15,462 (£14,378); war tax, £394,202 (£257,032). DUNEDIN Customs returns for May, followed by the figure for May, 1942, are as follows; Customs, £40,424 (£36.792); beer duty, £32.377 (£30,142); sales tax, £27,165 (£35,412); war expenses, £108,999 (£69,769).
