MR S. J. GIBBONS

The death has occurred of Mr Sills John Gibbons, of Hamilton, aged 87. Born in Middlesex, Mr Gibbons was the son of a former Lord Mayor of London. Before coming to New Zealand in 1878, he had a distinguished athletic career. He was chosen to play Rugby for England in the team the late Dr. Collins, of Wellington, captained. He was also a keen oarsman and had competed successfully at Henley. Mr Gibbons was educated at Dulwich College and London University. On arrival in New Zealand he joined his brother in Taranaki and later took up an appointment with the Colonial Ini surance Company, of Wellington. He subsequently farmed at Otaki, Levin, and Te Aroha. and was also one of the foundation members of the New Zealand Society of Public Accountants. Mr Gibbons had lived in retirement in Hamilton for the last 20 years. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, and a son.
