ALLEGED LOSSES OF SHIPPING
JAPANESE CLAIMS IN SOUTH PACIFIC MR FRASER’S STATEMENT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 31. “I can assure the people of the Dominion that no New Zealand troops have been involved in any such alleged shipping losses," said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) today, when Japanese claims were referred to him. In a recent message from New York it was mentioned that the Tokyo radio said that Japanese naval and air units claimed to have sunk five Allied transports, including one of 15,000 tons, in the south Pacific between May 1 and 24. Mr Fraser said he had no information of any 15.000-ton transport being lost, and most definitely could he allay any public anxiety by stating that no Dominion personnel were connected with any of the Japanese claims.
