LATEST PRICES AND SUPPLIES REDUCTION IN STOCKS (raou our own correspondent.) LONDON. September 5. Stocks of butter in cold storage in Great Britain declined heavily in the latter part of August, when arrivals from the Southern Hemisphere were very small. On August 27 the excess over last year’s corresponding figures, which in the middle of the month had reached the equivalent of 445,000 boxes, was reduced -to 345,000 boxes. Arrivals of butter from Australia and New Zealand were exceptionally light during August, the total of 389,100 boxes comparing with 697,400 boxes in the preceding month and 564.700 boxes m August, 1937. Prospective arrivals from these sources for the current month show an increase to 573,500 boxes, as against 453,100 boxes a year ago, but arrivals in October may be little different from last year’s corresponding figures. „ , .. . , Nearly 15.000 boxes of Argentine butter were received during August as against none in the same month last year; further quantities are still being shipped, but the production outlook, which until recently had been very promising, now appears rather less favourable. - Trade for Danish butter was firm during most of August and a considerable advance in quotations was recorded. Prices were: New Zealand finest salted 122s for July, 121s for August;. Australian, 120s 3d for July, 118s for August: Danish, 125s for July, 130s 3d for August. Percentages, respectively, compared with August, 1937, were plus 4, plus 2, plus 3.

Stocks in Cold Store During the fortnight ended August 27, 1938, there was a decline equal to 119,400 boxes in stocks of butter in cold storage in Great Britain, as compared with a decrease equal to 19,600 boxes during the corresponding period a year earlier. During the four weeks ended August 27 the net out-of storage movement was equal to 70,800 boxes, as against a net into-storage movement equal to 260,300 boxes in the preceding month and a decline equal to 32.60 C : boxes in the corresponding period a year ago. Total stocks remaining in cold storage as at August 27, 1938, were above the total for the corresponding date in 1937 by 345,300 boxes. During the week ended September 1, 131,690 boxes of butter and 27,881 crates of cheese arrived from New Zealand, while 16,580 boxes of butter and ; 11,670 crates of cheese are due in the coming seven days, with heavier quantities of butter but lighter arrivals of cheese in the following week.
