BEEF PRICES
HIGH IN ALL CENTRES A COMPARISON Whilst the Burnside market has been a shade dearer for fat cattle than at other centres the high Addington prices on Wednesday apparently exceeded those secured at any of the other metropolitan sales this week. A few outsize bullocks at Burnside made up to £26, but other classes were a shade cheaper than at Addington. Extra prime beef at Burnside was estimated to be 46s per 1001b, and for prime 43s 6d, whilst the best of the heifers sold to 45s 6d. The best of the heavy bullocks at Addington on Wednesday made a shilling or two more than at Burnside. Heifers and medium-heavy cows showed only a slight difference. Heifers were distinctly better at Addington, and a few pens of small extra prime heifers substantially exceeded Burnside figures. One small pen made 55s per 1001b, but these exceptional cases do not accurately reflect the market. With a scarcity of beef butchers occasionally have no recourse but to exceed the general run of prices if they want to avoid being left without supplies, and this was the case on Wednesday, the result being that very little of the better class of beef offering sold at under 46s per 1001b, and a fair proportion of quite plain beef another shilling or more. Heifers sold extraordinarily well, but they were also very dear at the previous sale, truck lots averaging up to £ls 17s 6d. There was an 'advance of 30s a head at the preceding sale for all average to good qualities of beef and this week's advance made the improvement for the fortnight about £3 10s a head.
The increased prices in the Auckland market have formed the subject of comment in the northern retail trade, but prices there are substantially lower than those at the two southern -entres. The best of the prices at Westfield this week was £lB 15s, with others from £ls 17s 6d to £l7. The Auckland cattle are generally lighter types than those in the south, particularly from the turnip growing districts offered at Burnside, but even after making allowance for this it would seem that current Christchurch prices are up to £4 a head dearer than at Auckland. It is interesting to note that at the Flemington (Melbourne) market at the present time beef is dearer than at any New Zealand market. At last week's market show bullocks realised £25 a head, or 49s to 51s per 1001b, and lighter sorts—the 7001b carcase is more general in Australia than in New Zealand —up to £l9, or 53s per 1001b.
