A CANTERBURY PILGRIM

Death of Mr Eli P.

Smart

PASSENGER ON SHIP

RANDOLPH

Another of the few remaining Canterbury pilgrims who came to Lyttelton in the First Four Ships in 1850 died last week in the North Island. He was Mr Eli Perrins Smart, who was the last survivor of the Randolph. He was in his ninety-first year, and had lived for many years at Woodville. Mr Smart’s parents and his 10 brothers and two sisters made their first home in Riccarton road. His brother William, who died a year or two ago, used to herd cows in Hagley Park. In the early sixties the family moved to Templeton. Mr ' Eli Smart lived for some years in Christchurch and later moved to Waipawa in the North Island, where he took up land. Mr Smart clearly remembered in his later years the part he played in the building of the Christchurch Cathedral. He carted stone to the site for use in the construction of -the building. At the time of his death he was patron of the Canterbury .Pilgrims’ and Earlv Settlers’ Association, and was at one time its president. At Papatawa, where he farmed for some years, he was one of the founders iof the Papatawa Co-operative Dairy Company. He was a much-respected figure in the Woodville district for many years. ■
