LABOUR provides for their SUnSET HERRS! Not only in old age but throughout the course of life people of today have every reason for gratitude to Labour. The Social Security Act has direct bearing upon the health and well being of all. Just consider briefly a few of the benefits which this humanitarian measure, the best in the world, provides: mm m m m V' I OLD AGE The Qualifying age has been reduced from 65 years to 60 years and the amount to be paid increased from 22/6 to 30/- weekly. Under the previous Government it was \Z/6 weekly. Other income allowed up to £1 weekly and they may own their own home and £SOO each in the Bank without the Age benefit being affected. SICKNESS The provisions of the Act as to sickness are new and are intended for the relief of persons who suffer a loss of wages or other earnings through temporary incapacity resulting from sickness or accident. Young people 16 to 20 years of age receive 10/- weekly and 20 years or over, Single men or women 20/- weekly. Married Couples 35/- and 10/- weekly for each child. UNEMPLOYMENT The benefits during unemployment are the same as the sickness benefits : Young people 10/-weekly, over 20 years Single men or women j2O/- weekly. Married Couple 35/- weekly and 10/- for each child. For the first time women benefit equally with men, and boys and girls 16 to 20 years old are provided for. • WIDOWS More liberal provision is made for widows than ever before and many new benefits are introduced. Widows receive 25/- weekly and 10/- for each child under 16 ,years (previously I 5 years) and they will receive pensions after the children are of working age and may receive it in certain circumstances after 50 years of age even if there are no children under I 6 years. Deserted wives whose husbands cannot be found are treated as widows and wives whose husbands are in a Mental Hospital are similarly provided for. ORPHANS Will receive up to 15/- weekly and will be allowed to live with relations or friends. INVALIDS The payments to totally incapacitated Invalids has been raised from 20/- to 30/- weekly. Prior to the advent of the Labour Government they were entirely dependent on charitable aid.' SUPERANNUATION Owing to the cost it was not possible to give full superannuation benefit without means test, but commencing in April, 1940, every person over 65 years will be entitled as a right to the sum of £IO in the first year, increasing by £2-10-0 yearly thereafter until £7B a year is being received. HEALTH SERVICE Every person, male or female, old or young will be entitled to free Medical , attention, medicines, drugs, appliances, etc. Also to free treatment in Public Hospitals and Mental Institutions, or a similar amount will be paid on their behalf to a Private Hospital. MATERNITY Every mother will be entitled to free ante-natal and post-natal medical advice and treatment including services of Doctor and Nurses at confinement in Maternity Hospital or elsewhere, ora similar amount will be paid to a Private Hospital. MOTHERHOOD The family Allowances are greatly extended. The age of children for whom payment will “WIIU W a k e received is extended from 15 to 16 years. The rate of benefit is increased from 2/- to 4/- for each child in excess of two. The permissible income of the family is increased from £$ to £5 weekly. MINERS Pensions are raised from 25/- to 30/- weekly, funeral expenses will be paid at death- and a pension of 17/6 weekly granted to the widow. - Economic pensions and War Veterans’ allowances, have also been increased in the Finance Act, 1938.'; The National Party say they will not put the Act into operation if they are returned to office.
