TENNIS CLUB’S DANCE
To celebrate the opening of the tennis season, members of the Shirley Tennis Club held a dance in the Shirley/ Masonic HalL Miss Mary Nolan’s band supplied the music, and Mr C. Edwards was master of ceremonies.
The organising committee comprised Mesdames C. Edwards. W. Wilkinson, Misses E. Egan; and K. King. Those present included Mesdames E. Horsfall.’Davey. C. Herd, A. Chrystall, Denis Bunz, M. Hintz. T. Howorth. W. E. Appleyard. D. S. Gibson, G. Waddington, A. Nelson, W. Wilkinson, J. Williamson, W. Macbrayne. J. O’Callaghan, Cummins. Marks, C. Edwards, Stevens, Misses June Chrystall. Kathleen King. Edna Egan, Olive Houston, Olive McLean. Olive King, Joy Howarth, Nancy Egan, Irene Howorth, Mary Wall, Ina Sladen, Metta Free, Beryl King, Audrey King, Phil Andrew, and Marjorie Turton.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
KIR WEE A number of visitors attended the monthly meeting of the Kirwee Women’s Institute, held in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s lounge. Miss E. West a way presided. Mrs Thompson and Mrs Wright were appointed delegates ter the half-yearly meeting of the womeH’s institutes to be held on October 26.
In response to a request from the Kirwee Swimming Baths Committee several institute members agreed to assist with the afternoon tea at a sale of work. Mrs Weir will be in charge of arrangements. Members were asked to meet at 10.30 a.m. in Cathedral square on October 26 for a visit to the factory of Ernest Adams. Ltd. After business, the programme included community singing, competitions, a recitation by Mrs Thompson, and a play reading by the institute drama circle, under the direction of Miss Nelson.
Results of competitions were:— Scones, Mrs Turner 1, Miss Bedford 2 and 3; bowl of spring flowers. Miss Westaway 1, Mrs P- Candy 2. Mrs Anderson 3; floral cluster. Miss J. Smith 1, Mrs F, Candy 2, Mrs Anderson 3; small bloom,' Miss McKie 1. Mrs F. Candy 2, Miss L. Thompson 3. The hostesses were Mrs Burleigh, Misses J. McKie and J. Smith.
