POSITION OF UNITED

CRICKET CLUB

SUCCESSFUL SEASON GREYMOUTH

The United Cricket Club, according to the report presented at the annual general meeting o£ members at Greymouth on Thursday evening, by the president (Mr Walter Rapley), was most successful last season. The club, it was reported, had won the Saturday competition, and was runner-up in the Sunday competition. There had been an improvement in the junior team compared with the previous season. The finances were in a healthy state, a balance of £4 17s fid being carried forward, although there had been heavy and necessary expenditure on material. There were no liabilities.

Messrs Rapley, Allen, Cullen, Swinburne, and Mann had earned representative honours. Thanks were expressed to the United Football Club for the use of its gymnasium and to a number of persons for generous support during the season. The election of officers resulted as follows; Patron, Dr. H. S. Ray; president. Mr Rapley: vice-presidents, Messrs A. A. Adams, J. Ryan, C. L. Kettle, F. H. Denton, E. Wames, P. Hvan, H R-‘an. W. Roth well, W. McCaffery. W. Reddington. G. Kear, C. Withefl, R. Packer, and Mrs I. E. Coffey; club captain, Mr B. Mann; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. F. Howes; 'delegates to the West Coast Cricket Association, Messrs L. Coffey and G. Cullen; committee. Messrs Baird. Glen. M. Taylor, Coffey, T. Tariing, T. Joseph. Mann, and Howes; selectors. Messrs Coffey. Taylor, Howes, and captains of teams. It was left to the committee to nominate teams in various grades and to arrange an opening date of which members will be advised later. The delegates to the association were instructed to support the Saturday competition as the main competition. It was decided that regular practices be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights, the nets to be used, every night if desired by players.

CRICKET AT GREYMOUTH

DECISION OF MABIST CLUB

The opening day of the new season for the Marist Cricket Club will be Sunday. October 9. This was a decision made at the annual meeting of members held at Greymouth on Thursday evening. Mr O. J. Morris presided.

The annml report, which was published previously, was adopted. The nomination of teams in the various grades ol the competitions was left to the incoming committee, as was the purchase of equipment. Thanks were expressed to Messrs W. Steere and W. Hamilton and to- the' press. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron. Rev. Father J. Holohan; president, Mr J. D, Cullen: vicepresidents. the same as last season, with the addition of the Very Rev. Father J. Long and the Rev. Brother Oswald; secretary-treasurer, Mr J. Mathews: club captains, Messrs O. J. Morris and H. Greenwood; committee. Messrs B. Rathbun, J. Cornish, J. Gurnow. J. Morris. B. Tindale, P. D. and W. Clancy. J, Leith, and W. Meates; delegates to the West Coast Cricket Association. Messrs Leitch and Mathews; auditor, Mr J. O'Donnell: selectors. Messrs- O. J. Morris and Mathews (seniors), and Rathbun (juniors); custodian. Mr Rathbun.

STATE PLACEMENTS AT GREYMOUTH

Work was found this week by the Grey mouth branch of the State Placement Service for 39 men. Of these, eight men and two youths were found permanent, two men and one youth temporary, and four men and two youths casual private employment. Twenty men were placed in State, or subsidised, full-time jobs.

RACE

ANNUAL WESTPORT SCHOOL CONTEST

The annual Westport Technical High School cross-country race, held on Thursday, was won by a first-year boy, D. MeLellan. who was off the limit (eight minutes), and won all the way. J. Murray (four minutes) was 300 yards away, second, and Parker (eight minutes) was third.

J. McDonald, off scratch, finished seventh, and recorded fastest time, 28min 53sec, for three and a quarter miles. He won the Nottle Cup.
