THE PLACEMENT SERVICE
REPORT FOR THE WEEK POSITIONS FOR EIGHTYTHREE MEN ' The State placement officer reports that during the week 83 positions were found for men in private employment. Of these 31 were permanent, and the balance temporary. All classes' of farm labour have been in strong demand and 18 workers were placed in the Canterbury district. Included were five tractor-drivers, five teamsters, and the rest general hands. Farmers requiring labour can apply to the local certifying officer (postmaster) in country districts, and if local labour is not available, the vacancy will be filled from the Christchurch register. Attention is drawn to the' Government’s subsidised scheme for .inexperienced farm workers from .19 to 25 years of. age. Standard rates of wages are paid to the workers, and a subsidyis refunded to the employer. This is regarded as a splendid opportunity for young men desirous of taking up farming pursuits. All classes of tradesmen were placed during the week. The demand for workers in the building industry is particularly active, and there is difficulty in finding first-class tradesmen, particularly carpenters. -
