ENCOURAGING YOUNG PLAYERS

MOVE BY ST. JOHN'S CLUB AT WESTPORT

A scheme to encourage tennis in the Buller district was adopted at the annual meeting of the St. John's Club on Wednesday night, whereby one boy and girl from each of the secondary schools at Westport will be admitted as full members for the current season; subscription free. The schools concerned will select the players. The annual report showed that the club had a credit balance of £7l 5s 6d.. The A team was runner-up in the Buller teams' championship last season, and two members, Misses P. Wheatley and V. Phipps, won the Buller doubles championship at /the Easter tournament.

Opening day was fixed for October

The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr G. Aitken; vice-presidents, Miss G., Cox and Messrs C. Walker and E. A. Owles: joint secretaries. Miss Wheatley and Mr E. SMALL AMOUNT FOR PURCHASE

After much consideration over the last three years, about the advisability of building a new Town Hall and Borough Council Chambers at Westport, and the eventual decision, through a poll of ratepayers, to erect a modern building at a cost of £11,500, no great value was placed on the present old building. The council accepted on Wednesday night the highest tender for its purchase and removal of the old hall, at a price of about £25. The O'Conor Home Institute was the purchaser. To mark the birthday of the. Reefton Women's Institute, members and friends met for the first time in the meeting room of the newly built women's rest room, and Plunket rooms at Reefton.

Competitions and muscial items comprised the evening's programme. Items were given by Mesdames Murtha, Cochrane, and Seaton, and Mrs G. Murtha was the accompanist. Mrs W. Auld ahd Miss Shepherd tied for first place in a cemulation. Mesdames Burns and Finlay flßced Scottish reels. In a nail-driving relay race a team of visiting members won the event. SHIPPING PORT OF GREYMOUTH GREYMOUTH, September 29. The Gabriella will sail to-night for Miramar. if bar conditions permit. The Kiwitea is expected to sail to-mor-row for Auckland. The Totara is expected to sail to-mor-ro wnight with timber for Petone and Wellington. The Kakapo is due at 10 o'clock to-night from Auckland with cargo. She will load to-morrow for Wellington. The Waimea is expected to leave Wanganui to-night for Greymouth, to load timber for Port Waikato. The Karepo is expected to leave Wellington to-night with cargo for Greymouth. She will load on Saturday for Auckland and Portland, completing at Westport. The Titoki is due on Saturday from Westport to complete' loading coal for Tarakohe.

The Kartigi is expected to leave Wellington to-morrow with cargo for Greymouth. On Monday she will load coal for Wellington and timber for Miramar. The James Cook left Sydney last week with cargo for New Zealand ports, includ-

ing 1000 tons.of machinery, general cargo, and poles for Greymouth. She is due here about October 7 to load for Sydney and Newcastle.

A Union Company' steamer is due here on October 10 to load timber for Melbourne and Adelaide. The Kalingo will load Greymouth cargo at Sydney on Monday next, completing at Eden for Wellington, Picton, Nelson, and Greymouth. PORT OP WESTPORT WESTPORT, September-29. The Ponty Pridd, an overseas steamer, arrived last night from Newcastle to load bunker coal before sailing for Nauru Island. The Titoki is due to-morrow from Tarakohe .and will load for Nelson. The Kaimai is due this evening from Wellington with general cargo, and will load to-morrow for return to that port. The Kaikorai, in port, will load for Lyttelton when coal becomes available. The Karepo, part loaded from Greymouth, is due here about October 3 to complete for Auckland.

PERSONAL NOTES GREYMOUTH Mr and Mrs M. Ford left yesterday on their return to Wellington. Miss A. Hewitson has returned to Christehurch. Mrs D. Robinson yesterday left on her return to Timaru.

Mr and Mrs R. A. Cunningham left yesterday on their return to Timaru. Mr C. Cooper has returned to Christchurch. Mr M. Masters has returned to Christehurch. , Mr C. E. Cramond, of the Public Works Department at Greymouth, has been advised of his transfer to Dunedin. He will be replaced by Mr B. A. Brown, of Dunedin. Mr A. J. Levings, overseer of plant, of the Public Works Department at Greymouth, has been transferred to the Department of Transport, as inspector of vehicles for the West Coast. Mr B. J. Kilpatrick, of the Public Works Department at Greymouth, has been notified of his transfer to Reefton and will leave in about two -weeks. He will be replaced by Mr H. D. Double, of Invercargill. Miss Colleen Moriarty, of the nursing staff of the Greymouth Hospital, left yesterday on a visit to Christehurch. WESTPORT .

Mr C. S. Falconer (Wellington), commander of the Venerable Order of St. John, is visiting Westport. He is also chairman of the National Council of the Young Men's Christian Association, and president of the New Zealand Hockey Umpires' Association. Mr C. Brewer (Culverden) is spending annual holidays at Westport. Mr V. Junge, of the Westport Borough Council office staff, who will leave on Saturday to take up a position at Rangiora, was entertained by the St. Andrew's Bible classes on Monday evening, when Mr L. Fox presented him with a fountain-pen as a token of the members' esteem. The Rev. H. L. Wilkinson, Mr F. N. R. Downard, and Miss G. Douglas joined in extending best wishes to Mr Junge in his future career.
