MIDDLE-WEIGHT TITLE BOUT HOLDER BEATEN ON POINTS AT TIMARU (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEQBXM.) TIMARU, September 29, In a contest for the middle-weight professional boxing championship tonight, G. Allan (Gisborne), the holder, was beaten by C. Hanham (Waimate), the challenger. The pair met recently when the judges gave the decision to Allan, though the spectators thought Hanham won. The fight to-night was not lively till the closing stages, when Allan forced the pace to make up leeway. The fourteenth round saw the pair fighting solidly, with Hanham getting the better of the exchanges. In the final round Hanham landed a hard right to the jaw, sending Allan through the ropes. He came back groggy, and Hanham inflicted heavy punishment. Hanham won by a good margin.

WELLINGTON BOUTS BAYNER GIVEN DECISION AGAINST FRANKLIN (FBESS ISBOCIA/TI6H TBUatAtt.) WELLINGTON. September 29. A professional boxing contest between Clarrie Rayner (Blenheim), New Zealand light-weight champion, and Joe Franklin . (Gisborne) lasted less than four rounds in the Town Hall to-night. The champion opened confidently and had his opponent on the defensive for the first three rounds. In the fourth round Franklin was warned for hitting after being ordered to break, and a little later when the pair were in a clinch near the ropes. Rayner collapsed to the mat. and the referee, Mr Alan Maxwell, disqualified Franklin, and awarded the contest to Rayner. This decision met with a hostile reception. Rayner was hooted as he left the ring. The well-filled house had some recompense in the second professional contest, in which Em Jacobs (Wellington), New Zealand light heavyweight champion, outpointed "Kid" Fisher (England). The men fought at catch-weights, and Jacobs had a decided advantage in height and reach, and also appeared to be much heavier.. Fisher proved himself a clever boxer, and the crowd was greatly pleased with the brave showing he made against heavy odds.

Lunging fiercely, Doyle missed Phillips and the impetus carried him through the ropes. He struck his head on the edge of the ring, knocking himself out. Kearton, the Labour Party candidate for the Temuka electorate, addressed a gathering Of about 600 persons in the Elite Theatre =.t Temuka on Wednesday night. Mr A. R. Beck moved that a vot«t of thanks be given to Mr Kearton. This Was seconded by Mr G. Harris, and carried With enthusiasm.

MR GLADSTONE WARD AT SYDENHAM

Mr Gladstone Ward, National candidate for Christchurch South, addressed a well-attended meeting] in the Brougham Street Methodist Schoolroom, Sydenham, last night. Mr L. Hollings presided. Although a noisy element was apparent in the early stages, Mr Ward was given a good hearing, and a vote of thanks was passed after his address. The candidate also addressed a meeting in the Durham Street Art Gallery on Wednesday evening. There was a good attendance, presided over by Dr. .T. Guthrie, and Mr Ward was thanked for his speech.

MR T. H. M'COMBS AT WEST LYTTELTON

Mr T. H. McCombs, Labour Party candidate for the Lyttelton seat, addressed a public meeting at West Lyttelton last night, Mr J. D. Sargentina presiding over an attendance of 50. The speaker Was accorded a quiet and attentive hearing, and at the conclusion a vote of thanks to the speaker and confidence in the Labour Government, moved by Mr .W. T. Lindsay, was carried. ,_ ~.,
