BRIDGE PARTY
FUNDS FOR BRITISH SAILORS* SOCIETY To give £IOO each year to help in the maintenance of the Seamen's Institute at Lyttelton is one of the aims of of the Christchurch branch of ' the Ladies' Guild of the British Sailors' Society, and to raise that sum social gatherings areh eld during the year. One of these, a very pleasant and successfu' bridge and mah-jong party, was held yesterday afternoon in private reception rooms at Ballantynes. Prizes, given by Mrs John Grigg. Mrs H. S. Vestey. Mrs J. G. Collins, and Miss M. C. Fryer, were won by Mrs Fred. Armstrong, Mrs T. Cargill, Mrs E. L. Siddall, and Miss Betty Larcombe.

WOMEN'S AUXILIARY
CANTERBURY MANUFACTURERS' ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association Women's Auxiliary was held in the Cosy Corner of the Young Men's Christian Association building Mrs C. S. McCully (president) in the chair. Miss L: Tabart, a life member of the auxiliary, gave an interesting talk to members. ' Mrs W. Taylor spoke of gardens and flowers, and the arrangement of flowers for decorative purposes. It was considered that the growing of flowers with which to make their homes beautiful was a "home industry" in which most women were interested. Mrs Taylor emphasised the value of flowering shrubs and small trees in the average pmall garden, and added that perennials were the best flowers to select when garden.. space was limited. The speaker then showed members how to pack a box of flowers for transit through the post. Mrs Taylor had. arranged flowers in a beautiful crystal bowl, which was presc.ited to Miss Frances Cooper in appreciation of her work at'the Industries Fair. CALEDONIAN SOCD3TY FINAL FORTNIGHTLY SOCIAL There was a large attendance pf members and friends at the Caledonian Hall on Wednesday evening, when the Canterbury Caledonian Society held its final fortnightly social for the season. Mr C. S. Thomas (president) presided, and on the platform with nim were Messrs G.-Sey and A. E. Purse (vice-presidents).- I Messrs B. Moore and .A. E. Purse (directors) arranged the programme, which consisted of the following items: Selections, society's pipe band; song, j Mr W. Toomey; Highland fling, Misses i Flora Fitt and Joan McDonald; song, Mrs Whitworth; violin solo, Mr D. Mitchell; acrobatic display, "lr C. Buckett's pupils; xylophone solo, Mr A. J. Williams: seann triubhais, Misses Irene Rees and Maisie Elliott; song, Mr B. Wilson; humorous recitation. Miss F. Mitchell; duet, Messrs R. Lake and E. Rodgers; selections, Scottish airs, Mr G. Bradford's orchestra; novelty item, Mr Charles Coates: song, Mrs Stewart; reel o' Tulloch, Misses F. Fitt, J. McDonald, I. Rees, and ,M. Elliott. The accompanist was Mr G. C. Russell, and music for the dancing was supplied by Mr G. Bradford's orchestra. PARTY AT WAIAU
At the home of Mrs George White. "The Bluffs," Waiau. friends of Mrs R. McDonald, Who was recently married, gathered at a kitchen party in her honour. The afternoon was spent pleasantly in games and competitions, tlw winners of which were Mrs Davies anr Miss Marjorie Oldman. Those invited were Mesdames R. McDonald, M. McDonald, C. Douglas, R.
