KAIAPOI FIRE BRIGADE

THREE OUTBREAKS IN LAST QUARTER REPORT SUBMITTED TO BOARD

The quarterly meeting of the Kaiapoi Fire Board was held yesterday, when the chairman (Mr H. C. Revell) presided.

The superintendent reported that the brigade had attended three fires during the last quarter, and the attendance !at practices had been good. The engines and plant were in good order, the motor-engine having been overhauled since the last report. The secretary of the Kaiapoi Fire Brigade wrote asking if the board would make a grant towards the expenses of members attending the Canterbury Fire Brigades' demonstration at Geraldine. It was decided that a grant of £3 3s be made. A report was received from Mr H. O. Hills- on the advisability of purchasing a bucket pump apparatus for use by the brigade. It was decided that the matter be deferred until the next meeting of the board. A satisfactory trial was made recently of the electric siren installed by the board as a fire alarm to replace the present bell, and reports were received that it could be heard well outside the borough. CRICKET COMPETITIONS TO START TO-MORROW MALVERN SUB-ASSOCIATION The annual meeting of the Malvern Cricket Sub-Association was held in Darfield recently. Dr. C. E. Reid presided.

The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2 7s.

The annual report said that the colts' match against Ellesmere was won by Ellesmere. The sub-association shield match was won by Malvern on the first innings, and the final match against Christchurch Suburban by Suburban. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patrons, Messrs P. G. Robinson and C. Adams; president, Dr. C. E. Reid; vice-presidents, Messrs G. H. Judd, G. H. Ridgen, W. Stone, W. Stott, G. T. Robertson. J. Talbot, C. Saundercock, C. Green; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. Summerville; advisory and selection committee, Messrs L, T. Wright, J. Gunn, F. Cullen; delegates to Canterbury Cricket Messrs J. Gunn and W. Summerville. The opening of the competition was fixed for to-morrow. It was decided to endeavour to play a third round of matches after harvest.

The following is the draw for matches in the first round, on the grounds of the first-mentioned team:— October I—Darfield v. Springfield, Hororata v. Sheffield, Greendale v. Coalgate. October B—Hororata v. Greendale, Sheffield v. Springfield, Coalgate v. Darfield. N October 15—Springfield v. Greendale, Coalgate v. Hororata, Darfield v. Sheffield. October 22—Springfield v. Coalgate, Greendale v. Sheffield, Hororata v. Darfield. October 29—Sheffield v. Coalgate, Springfield v. Hororata, Darfield v. Greendale. WOMEN'S INSTITUTE CHEVIOT

Mrs G. L. Nell presided at the monthly meeting of the Cheviot Women's Institute. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mesdames Dalgety, Marquet, and Moir in their recent bereavements.

Mesdames Nell and Gurnsey were appointed delegates to the half-yearly conference of the North Canterbury Federation. Mesdames A. Lundy and F. Gurnsey_ were appointed sick visitors. A design for the institute banner was chosen. The balance-sheet of the birthday party dance was most satisfactory. A talk on India and the superstitions of the people was given by the Rev. C. W. Haskell, a missionary in India, who is visiting New Zealand on furlough. Competitions resulted:—Bloom: Senior, Mrs C. W. Dalgety 1, Mrs J. T. Read 2. Junior, Mrs E. P. Honeybone 1, Miss L. INSTITUTE DANCE AT LITTLE RIVER

There was a large attendance of visitors and local people at the Little River Town Hall, when members ot the Women's Institute held a social to augment their funds. Those who gave items were:—Songs, Miss Crompton' (Christchurch), Mr J. Rennell (Christchurch); recitations. Jack and Betty Robb (Christchurch); tap dance, D. Carney. Music for dancing was played by Mrs L. Radford, Miss Myrtle Webster, and Mr B. Stuart.

Novelty dances were won by Miss Kathleen Brankin and Mr R. Chapman (lucky spot), Miss Betty Ussher and Mr N. Pidgcon (Monte Carlo), Miss Edna Dutton and Mr Chapman (lucky number).

WOMEN'S DIVISION OF FARMERS' UNION DUNSANDEL branch Mrs Buckenham presided at the monthly meeting of tho Dunsandel branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs R. J. Riches, Mrs H. Riches, and Mrs P. Stephens in their bereavements. It was decided that a grant be given each year to the women's rest home in the North Island. Mrs Cree gave an address on the modern trend in education. Competition results were:—Tapestry: Miss E. Chamberlain 1. Miss Mercer 2, Miss N. Wright 3. Toffee: Miss M. Allen 1. Bloom, large: Miss Skinner 1, Mrs J. Allen 2, Mr» H. Riches 3. Bloom,- small: Mrs T. Nairn 1, MiM M. Allen 2, Mrs J. tcott 3. MISSIONARY SERVICE AT CHEVIOT A missionary/ service was held at St. John's Anglican Church, Cheviot, recently, the speaker being the Rev. C. W. Haskett. Special prayers for peace were offered by the vicar (the Rev. W. A. Beaumont).

Mr Haskett, who is stationed at Karachi, India, and is doing deputation work in New Zealand, spoke on India to-day. Mr Haskett also spoke to the children at the Cheviot School.
