THE FORTY-HOUR WEEK
TO TUB EDITOR OP I'HB PRESS. Sir, —I quite agree with letters that have appeared in “The Press” recently in reference to the 40-hour week, especially with the lady who says her husband spends £1 on Saturdays in drink. That can easily be done even in a few hours on Saturday morning in shouting for various friends who, as a rule, hang on to you when you are “holding” and do not notice you when you are “broke." I also sympathise with the returned soldier, on the other hand, who said he is deprived of making 8s on Saturday morning for himself and his family when he wants it, and as a protest to the 40-hour week I shall vote "prohibition.” I suppose they are following Mr Savage’s precept to spend freely, eat, drink, ana be merry, the sky is the limit, there will never be another slump, or a “rainy day,” and you will get 30s a week when ybu are 60.—Yours, etc., DISGUSTED.
