CANCER RESEARCH IN ENGLAND

VIENNESE EXPERT COMES TO LONDON

LABORATORIES FOUNDED BY AMERICAN

(THOU ova own COKBESPOMDEHT.) LONDON, August 22. Professor Ernst Freund, the 74-year-old cancer expert, has arrived in London to continue his research work in England. His whole life has been devoted to the quest for a chemical cure for cancer. He is one of the greatest authorities on nutrition and food chemistry, and his work at the Vienna Rudolf Hospital is well known to medical men throughout the world. When he reached the age limit of 60 (says the “Yorkshire Post’’), he retired from his post as director of the Research Institute at the hospital, stnd continued his work at home until eight years ago, when he met Mr Frederick Pearson, an American millionaire greatly interested in cancer research. Mr Pearson provided Professor Freund with the capital to build his own laboratories. He spent almost a million dollars on endowing the Pearson Research Foundation, to which a hospital was attached. Thirty doctors were regularly employed there. The recent dismissal of the Jewish members of the staff induced Mr Pearson, who has lived near Rugby since he made England his home, to arrange for the transfer of the Vienna Institute to London, where it is likely to be attached to the West London Hospital. ~ A reserved man of simple tastes, Mr Pearson was formerly in the American Diplomatic Service. Since his retirement he has devoted himself to the study of medical literature.
