MID-CANTERBURY NEWS

ASHBURTON EAST SCHOOL MEN REQUIRED FOR GROUNDS FURTHER APPLICATION TO BE MADE A further effort to obtain men under the Government’s relief scheme of subsidised labour will be made by the Ashburton East School Committee, which decided on Monday evening that as the application for unemployed men to level the playground and break in ground for the children’s gardens had been unsuccessful, while other schools had men at work, an urgent letter be , to . th e Canterbury Education -Board to endeavour to obtain men at the earliest opportunity. It was said that nearly every school in the Ashburton County had obtained unemployed labour to improve grounds, but Ashburton East was unable to do so. Mr S. G. Macfarlane (headmaster) said the local Labour Bureau had reported that no men were available for the work.

The Canterbury Education Board wrote urging that as some inconvenience had beenncaused to head and sole teachers by the visit of canvassers to schools, the committees take steps to prevent canvassers gaining access to schools without the written consent of the board.

It was decided to ask the board for notices which could be erected on the grounds to the effect that canvassing was prohibited.

It was agreed that a motion picture projector, be purchased for use at the school. .

In his report, the headmaster said the attendance had been affected by measles. At the end of the second term the roll number was 473, but 13 children had left and 12 had been admitted. . Arrangements were well in hand for the spring flower show on Saturday. Mr Stanley Smith (a member of the Canterbury Education Board) would be invited to open the ahow.

Mr Macfarlane was given permission to approach Langley’s Estate with a view to obtaining the use of an area for a cricket ground for the school. ■ Mr W, S. Kerr (chairman) presided at the meeting.

PHYSICAL TRAINING ANNUAL EXHIBITION AT ASHBURTON A varied programme. including pyramids, mat drill, tumbling, exercises. living statuary, wand drill, parellel bar exhibition, vaulting horse, and dvmb-bells, was given by members of the St. Andrew’s Physical Training Club, Ashburton, in St. Andrew’s Hall last evening, for their fifth annual demonstration:

The programme, which provided excellent entertainment, was of a high standard, and provided a good examine of the activities of the club. In addition to items by members of the club, there were fencing demonstrations by Messrs D. Gordon and A. Calder; pyramids by St. Andrew’s Basketball Club, assisted by men; club swinging by Salvation Army girls: song in character by girls, arranged by Mrs ACalder and produced by Mrs D. Oor-' don;, tap-dance by Miss Dorothy King; part-song arid chorus by women; spring ballet .by the keep-fit .class; a running- whirl by the full party. The whole programme was under the capable direction of Mr A. Calder, instructor to the club. '

NATIONAL PARTY SOCIAL EVENING AT RAKAIA The Rakaia women’s branch of the National' Party held a social evening recently, when a good number of supporters were present. Games and dart-throwing were held. Mr C. Davison won a prize given by Miss Harrison.

Mr and Mrs R. A. Oakley, Mrs Rob* inson, and Miss S. Lamble gave musical items. Mr L. O. Oakley, president of the Rakaia branch of the party, thanked the women’s branch for its effort.

PERSONAL NOTES ASHBURTON The Rev. Wesley Parker, of Sydenham, will conduct .the anniversary services of the Baring Square' Methodist Sunday school on Sunday. Mr W. Bryant left, for Waipiata yesterday to represent the Ashburton Hospital Board at the meeting of the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee - this evening.

PRESENTATION AT HINDS

Many friends attended a social and dance held in the Hinds Hall recently to bid farewell to Mrs H. Donaldson and family, who will shortly leave the district to reside in Tinwald. The chairman (Mr G. D. ChiSnall) expressed regret tit the departure of Mrs Donaldson. Mr W. Henderson endorsed the chairman's remarks, and for Hinds and Lynnford residents presented Mrs Donaldson with a roll of notes. t Music for dancing was played by Mr Chapman and Miss Lily Dell. Mf R. Bush was master of ceremonies. MOTHERS’ UNION MEETS AT HINDS

The St. Luke’s Mothers’ Union, Hinds, held its monthly meeting at the vicarage. Mrs A. S, Moffat presided. Mrs Cooke (Ashburton) gave a talk on the early churches and the lives of the early ministers and bishops of New Zaland.

CONFIRMATION SERVICE AT MOUNT SOMERS

Bishop West-Watson visited Mount Somers on Sunday afternoon and administered confirmation of six indie and 11 female candidates, who were presented by the vicar (the Rev. Trevor Williams). St. Aidan’s Church was well filled. Mrs L. M. Goodrich was organist.

WOMEN’S GOLF

ASHBURTON BEATS RAKAIA AND METHVEN Matches were played by the Ashburton Ladies’ Golf Club against teams from the Rakaia and Methven clubs yesterday afternoon on the Ashburton course. Ashburton won both matches. At Shorty Miss M. Stone, of the Methven team, holed in one.

SUCCESSFUL DISPLAY AT RAKAIA

A successful show was held by the Rakaia Women’s Institute recently. There were very .large entries in each class. The judges were:—Flowers?. Mrs J. Lambie and Miss L. Lambie; handicraft, Mesdames J. Langley and Ziegler; cookery, Mrs McAnulty. Miss J. Buckingham. The winners of special awards were as follows; Most points in show: Mrs S; Hardy and Miss Margery Lee (equal) 1, Mrs Donaldson 2. WAKANUI : There was an excellent display of blooms at the spring flower show of the Wakanui Women’s Institute. There were comparatively good entries and most of the classes were well patronised. Constable (voluntary organiser for Mid-Canterbury) presided at the ordinary meeting of the institute which was held in conjunction with the show. It was decided to have a sales table at the next meeting in support of the Makogaf leper appeal. Competition stewards for the remainder of the year were appointed. PRESENTED

The Mount Somers Miniature Rifle Club held a successful euchre evening to close the season. Prizes were awarded to Miss T. Morgan and Mr J. Beattie ahd consolation prizes to Misses M. McKenzie, IS. HOCKEY

FINAL MEETING OF EXECUTIVE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON Reports presented at the final meeting for the season of the executive of the Ashburton Men’s Hockey Sub-As-sociation on Monday evening revealed that the association had had one of the most successful seasons for many years. The club competitions were well supported, and the visit of the Prince of Manavadar’s Indian hockey team Resulted ; n increased interest in the sport. It was estimated that there would be a surplus of about £8 on the year’s working, the best financial position the association had been in forsome years. A greater number of teams in the competitions and the proceeds of the match against the Indians increased the revenue. Mr A. C. Vincent (president) presided. Kaikoura issued a challenge to the association for the Quatre ; -Bras Cup through the Canterbury Hockey Association. It was decided to decline the challenge, because of the lateness. of the season,; but to grant • Kaikoura the right of the first challenge next year.

The executive decided to indent a further supply of hockey sticks for distribution to schools next season.

Mr Vincent was appointed delegate to the annual of the Ashburton Sports’ Association; on October 6, when it was decided to apply for two grounds at the Ashburton Domain for hockey next year. .

CLUB

SPEECH CONTEST AT METHVEN

At the monthly meeting of the Melhven Young Farmers’ Club. Mr C. Wightman presided over a fair attendance of young farmers, and several members of the Farmers’ Union. Mr V. P. 800 l (Ashburton District Secretary of the Young Farmers’ Federation) gave an outline of the proposed stock-judging competition for club members at the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Show.

A nrepared speech competition, for which Mr R. Dunkley (president of the Methven branch of the Farmers’ Union) gave a challenge cup and Mr R. G Gerard a cash prize for the runnerup. was held. The subjects selected by Mr Dunkley were:—(l) The uses and possibilities of electricity on the farm(2) the advantages' and disadvantages of agricultural and pastoral shows to the practical.farmer: (3) the menace tc the farming community of synthetic products. Mr R. Low. the club's advisory president, controlled the competition. Those taking part were Messrs R Wightman. L. Bush. C. Wightman. J VallancC, R. Lachlan. R. Penney, and T. Richards. YEAR OF STEADY PROGRESS LAURISTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

The Rev. D. B. Ashford (Rakaia) presided over a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Lauriston Presbyterian Church. The annual report stated that the church had enjoyed a year of steady progress. The balance-sheet revealed a sound financial position. The report of the Sunday school reviewed a most active and successful year. The election of officers resulted:— Secretary, Mr C. A. Fyfe; treasurer. Mr R. F. Letham - , managers, Messrs G. Letham, J. O. Lilley, Madkie, S. G. Lemon, J. Jacobs. E. G. Hayward, R. E. Cairns, J. G. Marshall, and C. Cone.

SUMMER SPORTS AT LAURISTON TENNIS AND CRICKET CLUBS OPEN In fine weather the Lauriston Cricket Club and the Tennis Club opened their seasons on Saturday afternoon. The cricket club’s opening took the form of a match, married v. single. The single men won. At the Lauriston tennis courts a yankee tournament was conducted by the club captain (Mr S. Letham). The winners were ■ Miss Joyce Lemon and Mr G. Gimson.

The president (Mr C. A. Fyfe) welcomed all present, including visitors from the Ashburton, Lyndhurst, Highbank. Rokeby, Rakaia, and Duntroon clubs. He played the first ball. The tennis club held a dance in the evening. Mr R. Ford (Eiffelton) played the music, with extras by Miss Ray Letham and Mr G. Gimson. Mr S. Letham was master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss P. Wright (Rakaia) and Mr Leathwick.

ASHBURTON CATHOLIC CLUB

FINAL MEETINGS ARRANGED

The annual prepared speech contest was fixed for October 9 at the weekly meeting of the Ashburton Catholic Club on Monday evening. Mr J. P. McDonnell (president) presided.

It was decided to close the winter programme with a mock banquet on October 27. One new member was elected. An invitation to a table tennis match from the St. Stephen’s Literary and Social Club was accepted. SPRINGBURN TENNIS CLUB Mr J. M, Bruce, president, presided at a meeting of the Springburn Tennis Club. It Was decided that the annual meeting be postponed and held at the earliest possible date. It was agreed that play start immediately, and that the meeting approve of the Use of the court by members last year and prospective mem* bers. A complaint was received about school children cycling On the court.
