A CHAIN LETTER

TO TH« *DITO» Of TM PEESS. Sir, —I have received through the mail, personally addressed, a scurrilous chain letter making an attack on my Church and tying it up with the Labour Party. The recipient of the letter is urged to •vote against Labour because it is (this is the implication) run by Catholics. That is quite untrue and sounds like a bit of sectarianism, which the Hon. Adam Hamilton, like the Christian gentleman he is. has roundly condemned. But I cannot help wondering if after all it really comes under that heading. Why was it sent to me, a Catholic? Why was it sent to other members of my faith, for as far as I can make out more Catholics than Protestants have received it? It looks to me like a clumsy attempt to make it appear that the National Party is indulging in sectarian propaganda in the hope of inducing Catholics to vote Labour. The whole thing has every appearance of a Communist trick, and we all know the subtlety of the Communists, who will stop at nothing. They have declared their intention to do all in their power to secure the return of Labour, and this

would not be the first time they have endeavoured to win, by questionable) methods, the support of those who would have nothing to do with them if the approach were made openly. One thing I can say without the slightest fear of contradiction is that Mr Hamilton and the people associated, with him will have nothing to do with sectarianism. I have known Mr Hamilton for many years, and I say unhesitatingly that at a time like this, when we must get back to true Christian principles and economic sanity, there is no other public man to whom I would be prepared to hand the destinies of our Dominion.—Yours, etc., A CATHOLIC LAYMAN.
