ENFORCEMENT OF BY-LAWS

CAMPAIGN AGAINST OFFENDERS

DECISION OF NEW BRIGHTON COUNCIL "We are having great difficulty with cyclists in not keeping to the roads, in cutting corners, and, in many cases, riding on the footpaths when taking short cuts," said the Mayor (Mr E. L. Smith), at the meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council last evening. The offenders were usually young people, said the Mayor. The council did not wish to be hard on them, but it was starting a campaign to see that the by-laws were enforced, and would take action against offenders. Others present were Crs. J. N. Clarke, W. E. Wilkin. H. R. Macdonald, A. W. Owles, T. E. Thomson, and C. V. Lester.

The South Brighton Gala Committee was given permission to hold its annual gala in the Pleasant Point Domain on January 2, and the Pioneer Motor Club was given permission to hold races on the New Brighton beach on October 15. A letter was received from Dr. T. F. Telford, medical officer of health, advising that he had directed Mr Pargeter, district engineer, to investigate how the borough nightsoil was being disposed of. The engineer reported that he found all the conditions thoroughly satisfactory, so much so that he must offer the council his congratulations on the excellent way in which this difficult work was being carried out. The medical officer believed that the public's interests were being fully protected. The sub-committee suggested that a letter be sent to the Christchurch City Council, asking if arrangements could be made by which the council could deposit nightsoil on one of the city's reserves at Chaney, and, if so, under what conditions. The suggestion was approved. It was decided to congratulate the Rawhiti Women's Hockey Club on winning its grade in the Canterbury competitions and the six-a-side tournament at Methven.
