DAFFODIL SHOW AT LINCOLN

TWO SPECIAL FLORAL DISPLAYS

OPENING PERFORMED BY MR H. S. S. KYLE

The Lincoln Daffodil Show, which was officially opened by Mr H. S, S. Kyle, M.P., took place in the public hall on Saturday, under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church. Special floral displays were staged by Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, "Otahuna," and Canterbury Agricultural College. Mr H. Dulieu, the chairman, thanked the exhibitors, donors of trophies, judges of the various sections, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, and Lincoln College, and introduced Mr Lennie, who complimented the exhibitors on chs splendid display, especially mentioning the flowering shrubs. Mrs Taylor, the decorative judge, also praised the high standard of the exhibits, and suggested additional classes in that section, namely for a box of flowers and decorated table. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes said the show was much better than in former years, and congratulated all those concerned. He said he was sure the task of the judges was not easy, by any means. Mr Dulieu introduced Mr Kyle, who also offered congratulations on the display, especially in view of the severe winter experienced, and then spoke of the excellence of gardening as a hobby. The judges were:—Daffodils, cut flowers, fruit, and vegetables, Mr T. D. Lennie; decorative, Mrs Taylor; home industries, Mrs J. Pawsey; cooking, Mrs D. McVinnie.

The winners of most points in the various sections were:—Daffodils, Colonel J. Stafford. 33 points. Miss Sharp (Halswell) 16; cut flowers, Mrs H. J. Macartney 34 points, Miss G. Stowe 19. Decorative, Miss G. Stowe (Halswell) 24 points, Mrs G. Henderson 21. Fruit and vegetables, Miss I. McDonald 45 points, Mrs H. J. Macartney 13. Home industries, Miss N. Brown 29 points, Miss M. Young 14. Cookery, Mrs J. McVinnie 33 points, Mrs G. Henderson 28.

RECORD ENTRIES IN FLOWER SECTION

CHURCH DISPLAY AT OHOKA

The annual flower show in aid of the Methodist circuit funds was held recently at Ohoka. There was a record number of entries in the flower section. . . The Ashe challenge cup for most points in cut flowers was won by Mrs R. Jackson. Other winners of points prizes were:—Other than narcissi, Mrs R. Jackson; novice class, Mrs Hassall; junior class, Leo Jackson; section E, decorative, Mrs Sheat; most entries, Mrs R. Jackson; most points, Mrs R. Jackson; runner-up most points, Trevor Woodfield; champion trumpet, Mrs R. Jackson; champion barrii, Mrs R. Jackson; champion junior, Trevor Woodfield; champion bloom, Mrs E. A. Woodfield; decorative section, Mrs H. Lucas and Mrs H. W. Martyn; most points other than flowers, Miss J. Heald; most points domestic section, Miss D. Duff. SPRING FLOWER SHOW AT OXFORD FINE BLOOMS EXHIBITED The Oxford spring flower show was held in the Town Hall. There was a large attendance of the public. Because of the very wet season, the daffodils were not as numerous as on some former occasions, nor was the quality quite so good. There were, however, some very fine blooms. Mrs E. A. Woodfield was the largest and most successful exhibitor, and besides winning the prize for the most points, won championships for Incomparabilis, Leedsii, and Poetaz. Mr L. P. Hawke won the championship for long trumpet, and also for premier bloom in the show. Mr L. Watson exhibited the premier Barrii. In the novice section, Mrs M. H. Johnston gained most points. The daffodil cup, presented by Mr L. P. Hawke for the best collection of six daffodils to represent at least three classes, was won by Mrs Woodfield. The juvenile section was an outstanding display. The display of school work was particularly attractive, and received much commendation. The show was opened by Mr T. D. Lennie, judge of the daffodil section. Special prizes and trophies were won as follows:—Most points in cut flowers: Mrs J. Tomlinson. R. W. Comyns Memorial Cup for decorative section: Mrs J. Tomlinson and Mrs W. M. Dalley (equal). Flowering shrubs: Mrs H. Luers. Most points In novice section: Mrs K. Henderson. Most points for exhibitors under 20: Miss Margaret Early, who also received the special tcophy .for a p,qsy. Woodfield Cup for most points in daffodil section, for exhibitors under 15: Miss R. Graham. Most points in the various sections were gained as follows: —Domestic, Mrs W. M. Dalley; grain and seeds, Mr S. Skurr; potatoes, Mr A. A. Fantham; fruit and, vegetables, Mrs M. H. Johnston. Mrs E., A. Woodfield had most points in the show.

STYX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH KITCHEN GIFT EVENING The congregation of the Styx Presbyterian- Church entertained Mir P Ford and Miss C. Farrar, to a kitchen gift evening recently. Those / taking part in the evening's entertainment were Mrs J. Dixon and Miss C. Barnes, Mrs J. Marwick and .Mrs P. Halstead. Young People's Club At the "wind-up" meeting of the Styx Presbyterian Young People's Club Mr H. Campbell-presented Mr-F. Ford and Miss C. Farrar with a tray. HOSPITAL, LADIES* COMMITTEE An afternoon was arranged by the Oxford Hospital Ladies' Committee to collect eggs and books for the use.of '. the hospital. A competition arranged by Mrs H. Thompson was won by Mrs Bridge. Songs were sung by Mrs Inwood, Misses H. Beere, R. Ryde, and Mr. Ward. A recitation was given by Miss Nancy Mann, and a duet was sung by Mesdames Inwood and W. Johnston. The accompanist was MrsC.E. Johnson. ' '•• „ ■ _ Mr Fisher, the chairman of the Oxford County Council, spoke on the finances of the hospital. Hostesses were Mesdames P. Thompson, W. Reed, and E. Bowman. EUCHRE AND DANCE AT EAST EYRETON A euchre, party-and dance was held, in the EastEyreton Hall on Saturday evening, in aid of hall funds. Winners of cards were:—Women: Miss C. Martin 1, Mrs W. Martin 2. Men: Mr F. Beal 1, Mr R. Hassall 2. Music for dancing was played by Mr V. Lange (Belfast).
