LAND WANTED FOR HALL
WAIMAIRI BEACH PROGRESS LEAGUE A request lor a portion of land on which to erect a public hall, in the south-west corner of the Selwyn Plantation Board's reserve at Waimair:' Beach, was made to the board yesterday morning by the Waimairi Beach Progress League. For the deputation, the president (Mr P. E. L. Broad) said that the league, which was doing good work in the locality in many ways, desired a small portion of ground on which to erect a small hall for social purposes. He considered that a hall would be of great benefit to the area. Mr W. P. Spencer How much land would you require? Mr Broad: About an eighth of an acre.
In support of the application, Mr W. J. Walter, of the Waimairi County Council, said that if the land was granted he did not think that the residents would have any difficulty in raising the money to build the hall.. The nearest hall to the area was the North Beach Memorial Hall, about one and a half miles away. The chairman (Mr N. C. Kensington) • Is it proposed to purchase the land? The board cannot give it away because it is only a trustee. • Mr Walter, in reply, suggested that the board could charge a peppercorn rental.
