FIFTY-MILE EVENT WON BY D. SWANSTON

SOUTH ISLAND CASH

CHAMPIONSHIP

The 50-mile South Island cash road cycling championship, conducted by the Southbridge Athletic Club at Southbridge on Saturday, attracted the best field seen in this event for several seasons and a very interesting race resulted. The three scratch men, L. G. Fleming, W. J. Lamberton, and J. H. Newlove. who were conceding a handicap, of 20 minutes to the two limit riders, F. Frandsen and W. Luke, retired early in the race, and the result of the championship was In doubt until after the line was crossed ana the times worked out. D. Swanston (simin), who finished in fourth place, was the winner by 2 l-ssec from I. Sutherland, off the 4min mark, who rode nearly half the distance on his own. At half-way Frandsen had dropped back from the front, and his co-marker had been joined in the lead by J. Bland (18min) and L. G. Taylor (18min). The leaders at this stage had a slight lead from A. Evans (18min) and J. Butcher (lGmin). and were three minutes ahead of E. P. Wood (14min), D. Speir* (14min), H. D. Annett (14min), and K. itf- Annett (14min). The next bunch, consisting of R. Pockson (16min). F. Frandf.-' (lemin), J. F. O'Reilly (llmin), A. oampson (llmin), D. Newell (12Jmin), F. Parkin (llmin), A. Meadows (12jmin), M. Inwood (llmin), E. Guthrie (llmin), and J. J. Guthrie (12Jmin), passed after an interval of lmin 30sec, and was 40 seconds xn front of E. C. Hall (lOmin), D. Swanston (sJmin), P. Doherty (llmin), L. Dolheguy (s£min), E. Jones (lOmin), . B. Evans (lOmin), C. Johnson (7Jmin). and R. Slack (sJmin). I. Sutherland, who was riding alone, passed lmin 20sec later, and the two remaining scratch men, Fleming and Lamberton, were 2Jmin further behind. COMBINED CLUBS' ROAD RACE

SCRATCH TEAM WINS

The combined cycling clubs of Christchurch held a 100 kilometre (62.14 miles) road race on Saturday afternoon, the event being run under the group system. With a sealed handicap. Each group was dispatched at two-minute intervals, the scratch riders going away first ar.d the limit riders last. The weather was ideal for racing- and the scratch team, consisting of A. J. Lancaster, R. W. Rondel, I. Forgie, C. E. Sullivan, and E. A. McKaskell, combined well to establish a record time of 2hrs 38min 25sec. Sullivan was the first rider to finish, beating Lancaster by three lengths, with Rondel three minutes beE. D. Taylor, a promising junior rider, put up a remarkable performance. With half the Journey covered he left his comarkers and caught the bunch to • which he had given two minutes start. He had covered 46 miles of the journey and his riding time was equal to that of the scratch team, the result being that he won the sealed handicap easily.^ Results were as follows: Fastest Times—rC. AVON AMATEUR CLUB With the big Akaroa race only a." few weeks away, members'of the Avon Amateur Cycling Club turned out in force for the 40 miles event on Saturday to Watkuku, Rangiora, and return. J. V. Martin, W. D. Marks, and E. W. Wildey were on scratch, and conceded starts up to 17 minutes. Nearirig Waikuku the 14min riders, F. McGrath and H. Robinson, were up in front with T. W. Peek and C. Ireland. C. Allen (4min) left his co-markers at Kaiapol, and, riding a brilliant solo race, gradually worked his way forward. Peek, Ireland, McGrath, and Robinson kept the lead until near Kaiapoi, when Peek and Robinson fell back. Allen had now gathered in C. V. Cattermole (9min) and A. Hall (11mm) about half a mile behind the leaders. Although Martin, off scratch, had left his co-markers, and, riding well, he was down over half a minute for time on Allen at Kaiapoi. Allen. Hall, and Cattermole were up with the leaders at the Waimakariri bridge. Riding at a brisk .pace until within three miles of the finish, he left the bunch and, opening upi a big gap. finished over a minute ahead of A. Hall. Allen also registered fastest time. The North Island 100-mile road racing championship, held in the Napier and Hastings districts, resulted in a win for O. Disley (Wellington). The course was over three laps, each of 33 1-3 miles, and from Stortford Lodge led to the Ponglands turnoff, through Pukahu. Hayeloek North. Clive, Napier, Taradale, Waiohiki. and Pakowhai. and back to Stortford Lodge, where the finishers were greeted by 500 people. Platings were:— P. L.
