OBITUARY

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING AT RANGIORA Fully 300 persons from all parts of the province attended the annual Catholic ball, held in the Parish Hall, Rangiora, last night. The ballroom was decorated with ferns and greenery and yellow, green, and orange streamers suspended from the ceiling made a bright canopy over the dancers. Music for dancing Was played by Miss D. Brady’s orchestra. A luckyspot waltz was won by Miss Freda Morris and Mr Gladstone Fay. An exhibition of tap dancing was’ given by Misses Annette Golding and Nita Lockhart. Messrs R. Jones and D. Lyons were masters of ceremonies. Arrangements for the ball were made by a committee comprising Mesdames G. Brady, O. Mclntee, L. Moran, R. O’Brien, M. O’Connor, Miss E. Brady, Messrs G. The Kirwee citizens held their annual ball in the Kirwee Hall, where there was an excellent attendance. The committee, with Mr Rendel Wilson chairman and Messrs N. Wilson and R. Mansell joint secretaries, had made complete arrangements for the comfort of the guests. Novelty dances were won by Miss Joan Bell and Mr E. Williams,- Mrs Kesteven and Mr L. Roper. Music for dancing was played by the Majestic dance band and extras by Mrs G. Begg. Messrs C. King and A. D. Thompson were master of ceremonies.

SUMNER DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

FANCY DRESS DANCE The Sumner District High School held its annual fancy dress dances in the Sumner Town Hall, which was specially decorated for the occasion. The festival which was in the hands of the school staffs of the primary and secondary departments occupied two nights and was a great success. The prizes won by the juniors were: —Tiny Tots, Denise Petersen (Fairy), and David Rogers; most effective dress, Phyllis Melrose (Little Old Lady), Maurice - Goodall (A Soldier); most original, Noeline Carter (Daylight Saving), Bruce Donaldson (Paper Boy); specials, Rosemary Thompson (Japanese Sunshade), Gwynfa williams (Spanish Girl), and Bruce Murdoch (A Rajah).

The senior awards were;— Most effective, Peggy Cant (Night), Walter Linton (Pirate); most original, Rhoda Mauger (Dressmaker), David Sarelius (Popeye); specials, lan Munro (Indian Raiah), Suzanne White (Nurse), Nydia Sim (Early Victorian).

CROCKFORD’S CLUB The second night of a two-night Howell match, played at Crockford’s Club, resulted as follows:—North and south:, Mrs F. Banks and Mrs J. M. Turnbull 1, Mrs C. M. Hill and Mr D. T. McCormick, Mr and Mrs J. J. Ardagh, and Mrs A. Rose and Mrs E. Wharton (equal) 2. East and west’ Mrs H. H. Wauchop and Miss E. Aitken 1, Mrs M. M. Bayne and Miss V. Sapsford 2, Mrs N. MRS R. E. PARISH The death occurred recently of Mrs Rebecca Elizabeth Parish, an old' and respected resident of Springston South. Mrs Parish was born in Ferry road, Christchurch, 84 years ago, and was the eldest daughter of the late Mr William Sparkes, an early colonist. She married Mr William Parish, who as a child, came to New Zealand in one of the First Four Ships, the Cressy. After her marriage, Mrs Parish went to Springston South, and had lived in the district for 63 years.

Her only son died early this year, and she is survived by two daughters, Mrs R. G. Kimber (Springston South), Mrs W. Braven (Lochiel, Invercargill), a brother, Mr Fredrick Sparkes (Riccarton), and a sister, Mrs P. Goodrich (Pefone). The funeral took place at the Springston cemetery. The Rev. C. L. Sparrow conducted the service, and the pall-bearers were Messrs R. and C. Kimber (grandsons), A. Manning, and F. Greaves. Many floral tributes were received. ‘
