WOMAN’S DEATH IN WELLINGTON
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST (fk£sl ii«otii.Tios teLZaaiM.) WELLINGTON, September 22.
. A finding that Mrs Emily Elizabeth Williams, aged 46, of Mount Pleasant, Christchurch, died in the Wellington hospital on August 25 from injuries received through being struck by a fnotor-car in Brooklyn road on July 27, was given by the- Coroher (Mr E. Gilbertson) at the inquest to-day, “I feel sure from the evidence that the motorcar involved in this accident did not pass a tramcar when it Was stationary,” he said. ‘‘There is ho doubt that visibility was bad. This is One of the many cases that come before me of pedestrians in dark Clothing crossing the road at night in poor visibility. Motorists encounter many such cases. It may be contended that under such Conditions, motorists should creep along, but thgi-e is a certain amount of excuse.” The evidence of the driver of the motor-car, David Norman Costley, was that he passed a city-boUnd tram, and after doing so observed people standing out on the road. He passed them on the kerb side. When about six feet form the kerb, he saw a dark object in Kis beams. He saw ho chance to avoid the person, so declutched, braked the car, slewed, and turned over. He did not khOW if the woman was struck before or after the overturn, He did hot know till after the accident it was a woman.
