MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THURSDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) REMAND GRANTED

Patrick James Bennett was remanded to Invercargill on charges of breaking and entering and theft at Waimumu and unlawful conversion of a motorcar at Invercargill. On three other charges of unlawful conversion of cars he was convicted and discharged. Detective-Sergeant J. Bickerdike said that the accused had escaped from the Borstal institution, where he was serving , a term of three years. He had stolen a car at Invercargill, and driven it to Dunedin, where he left it and stole another, which he drove to Oamaru. At Oamaru he stole another, and drove it as far as Ashburton, stealing another car there, and driving it to Christchurch. All the cars had been recovered. CASE ADJOURNED Charges of being drunk in charge of a car and of failing to report an accident were preferred against. John Henry Miller (Mr R. A. Young). Sub-Inspector W. E. Packer asked for an adjournment because some of the witnesses were not available. Counsel entered an objection to the adjournment, and said the accident was alleged to have happened as far back as April 8. Sub-Inspector Packer said that if the accident had been reported there would have been no delay. The Magistrate granted an adjournment to September 29. SALE OF LIQUOR Terence Albert Newman and Allan Henry White were each fined 20s, and ordered to pay costs on a charge of aiding and abetting in the sale af liquor after hours. REMANDED John Stuart Jarman and another, whose name was suppressed, were charged with the unlawful conversion of a motor-car, valued at £175, the property of lan Douglas Blair, and a car, valued at £2OO, the property of John Faulkes Landreth.

Mr C. S. Thomas appeared for Jarman, and Mr W. F. Tracy for the other, and asked for bail. Detective-Sergeant J. Bickerdike asked that the bail be made substantial 1 in the case of Jarman, as more serious charges were pending. Both the accused were icmanded to appear on September.29. Bail at £SOO and one surety of £SOO for Jarman, and £IOO and one surety of £IOO for the other accused were granted, both being required to report daily to the police. SUNDAY TRADING 'Douglas Frank Dailey was convicted and fined 20s, and ordered to pay costs oh each charge of exposing goods for sale on a Sunday, and trading on a Sunday. Edward Robert Allpress was remanded to appear on September 20 on a charge of theft of a cycle valued at £3. Charles William Hervey was fined 10s, and ordered to pay costs for allowing a chimney to catch fire. CIVIL COURT (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) Judgment by default was given for the plaintiffs in the following civil claims:—Stirlings London Warehouse V, H. E. Dick, £1 Is 3d; Bishop and Company, Ltd., v. James Salt, £2 5$ 3d; S. G. Holland and S. E. Holland, in business as the Christchurch Mechanical Works, v. P. Shine, £SO; Christchurch City Council v. Arthur Sinclair, £2 6s 8d; W. H. McKinley v. W. R. Anderson, £1 Is; Larges, Ltd., V, J, Higgs, £ll 2s 6d; William Appleby Stubbs v. John Smith, £2O 153. JUDGMENT SUMMONSES In a judgment summons case, H. Isaacs was ordered to pay A. J. White. Ltd., £3 17s 9d forthwith, in default four days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended as long as he pays 5s a week. R. A, Nock was ordered to pay P. H. Kitchingman £4 13s 6d forthwith, in default four days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended while he pays £1 a fortnight.
