AUXILIARIES FOR FIRE BOARD
♦- , APPLICANT’S COMPLAINT Although more than :’0 men visited the Christchurch Central Fire Station last evening to peruse' the conditions of appointment for positions of auxiliary firemen under the Christchurch Fire Board, as advertised in "The Press” yesterday, they found that the conditions were not available because of the absence of the Superintendent fMr A, Morrison). However, inquiries made last evening from Mr Morrison revealed that, extraordinary clrcum : starices prevented his attendance at the station when the men were present. "It. was rather an unfortunate position and I regret it very much,” said Mr Morrison. "At 6.50 p.m. I was suddenly called away from the station because of an illness in my family, and I was unable to return until two hours later. Tire Deputy-Superintendent (Mr G. Barnes) told the men to call this. evening. However, the men can call during their lunch hours, or on any night next week, if they wish.” Speaking to a reporter last evening, one of the men, Mr E. H. Pateman, said that the advertisement invited intending applicants to. call at the station between 7 and B p.m. They waited until 8.30 p.m.. but the Superintendent was-not in and the conditions of appointment were not available,' and they could not obtain any information about how long the Superintendent would be out. ' • The men were keqnly disappointed, as some of them would not be. able to visit the station between 7 and 8 o'clock this evening, continued Mr Pateman. The type that timed up was. a very, good one. • "I do not think that they will be so keen alter the setback they received,” he concluded.
