Government circles predict early approval of the new trade agreements among Canada, England, and America in spite of some dissension. Reports that the wheat, lumber, and fruit preferences will be sacrificed have caused considerable concern, particularly in the western provinces. It is reported that the willingness of the United States to give Canada a preferential market for lumber and fruit is considered inadequate compensation for the loss of British preference. , • ... The Acting-Prime Minister (the Hon. J. G. Gardiner, Minister for Agriculture), following a discussion by the Cabinet with the Canadian commission negotiating the trade pact with Washington, stated that the negotiations were proceeding steadily. . . . He refused to make any statement about when the proposed pact would be complete. The British and United States negotiations are proceeding simultaneously.
