FIVE EASTERN STATES STRUCK SEVENTY-FIVE DEAD AND HUNDREDS INJURED NEW YORK POWER SUPPLY CUT OFF 'tUHJTED press *sauounoN--copT B mHT.> (Received September 22, 8.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 21. A West Indian hurricane struck the Atlantic seaboard from New Jersey to Connecticut Valley, leaving more than 75 dead and doing 100,000,000 dollars damage. Thirty persons who were on a Long Island Sound ferry are missing. Torrential rains accompanied by a 70-miles-an-hour wind flooded New York, chiefly Long Island, endangering many populous areas. Roads have been destroyed in many places and communication and power lines are down. New York city’s electric power supply lines were broken and the central portion of the city was without light during the night. Many radio stations are out of commission. Extensive flooding is also reported from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New Jersey. The liner Queen Mary has delayed its sailing for a day. Hundreds were injured by collapsing buildings, objects being tossed about, and falling trees. There were numerous fires. Tidal waves struck Providence and Boston, sweeping a thousand feet inland and doing great damage.
