SOUTH CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS
PLAY TO START TO-MOKROW
Although entries for the senior section of the South Canterbury championship golf tournament, which will start at the Highfield course to-morrow', are smaller than anticipated, the standard should nevertheless be high. The intermediate section has attracted large entries and good attention has been paid to the junior section.
The present title-holders are as follows:—Senior, J. L. Mackay: intermediate, J. H. Mitchell; junior, S. D. Mason. A stableford bogey handicap will be played to-morrow morning, followed by a four-ball bogey handicap. The championships will be decided on Sunday over 36 holes of medal play. A teams’ handicap match will be Included in the afternoon round, and morning and afternoon medal handicaps will be played in conjunction with the championship rounds. Bogey handicaps will be played on Monday in the morning and afternoon, for W'hich post entries will be received. [THE PRESS Special Service.! WAIMATE. September 22. The annual open tournament. conducted by the Waimate Ladies’ Golf Club was held yesterday and attracted entries from Temuka. Geraldine. Timaru, and Oamaru. The morning round was marred by a hoaw fall of rain and play was shortened to nine holes. The weather cleared rapidly, and the afternoon games were played under ideal conditions. The best gross score in the stroke handicap. played over nine holes, was returned by Mrs L. Mann (Waimate) with 46. Mrs Mann also led on the net score with 39, but in view of her success in the gross score competition, the award was made to Mrs A. Grant with 40. The junior net handicap Was won by Mrs D. Macdonald. Both Miss J. Horwell (Timaru) and Mrs K. Parr returned scores of 5 down to win the senior and junior bogey competitions respectively. - In the four-ball bogey round. Mrs J. C. Templer and Mrs, Parr, and Miss Horwell and Miss G. Manchester, finished all square. Oh a count back, Miss Horwell and Miss Manchester were adjudged the Winners. Results:—

Four-ball Bogey—Mrs Templer and Mrs Parr all 'square, Miss Horwell and Miss G. Manchester all square, Mrs Ward and Mrs McLennan 3 down, Mrs E. B. Fraser and Mrs N. A. Rattray 4 down, Mrs Deacon and Mrs J. J. Healey 4 down, Mrs A. Grant and Miss R. Orelg 5 down, Mrs S. I. Fitch and Mrs Macdonald 5 down, Mrs Waldie and Mrs Ruddenhlau 6 down. Miss Horwell and Miss Manchester won on the count back.
AVONDALE LADIES’ CLUB
In the A grade bogey competition for Mrs E. Harding's trophy, the following were the best cards returned;— Mrs H. F. Rutland (14), a down; Mrs J. M. Preston (8), 7 down; Mrs W. Baton (11), 8 down:.Mrs L. Smith (11), 8 down. In the B grade competition for Mrs N. V. Smith’s trophy, the best cards were;— Mrs D. P. Brennan (17). 3 down; Mrs T. R. Smith (21), 3 down; Mrs K. B. Macßae (22), 9 d6wn; Mrs M. Tench (20), 6 down; Mrs H. G. Ostler (20), 7 down; Miss E. Galvin (23), 8 down.
HAREWOOD LADIES’ CLUB
A bogey match was played at Harewood yesterday. The following were the best cards returned: —Mrs A. S. , Geddes, 6 down; Mrs G, D. Law, 6 down; Miss P. Clowes, 7 down; Mrs A. R. Blank, 7 down; Mrs M. A. Stedman, 8 down.
RANGIORA WOMEN BEAT KAIAPOI
An inter-club match between the Kaiapol and Rangiora Women’s Golf Clubs was won by Rangiora by 6 games to 2. Details (Kaiapoi names first):—Miss R. Mclntosh lost to Mrs M. Leech, Mrs Evans lost to Mrs A. C. Fraser. Mrs Aitken lost to Mrs Masters, Miss N. Stevenson lost to Mrs Fleming, Miss N. Mclntosh beat Mrs Williams, Miss M. Mclhtosh lost to Mrs Proctor, Miss Patterson beat Miss Hodgson, Mrs Alex. Mclntosh lost to Mrs Ballinger.
RANGIORA LADIES’ CLUB
The best scores returned In the monthly Stableford bogey of the Rangiora Ladies’ Golf Club were::—Mrs G. E. H. Davis 34, Mrs Menzies 30.
Best scores In a second Stableford bogey match played recently were:—Miss N. Morrlsh 29, Mrs F. O. Tolmle 20, Mrs A. C, Fraser 24, Miss Verrall 22.
RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ANNUAL TOURNAMENT
The annual golf tournament of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association will be held on the Avondale course on November 6. and entries Will close on November 1. The tournament Is open to all former service men, amateur or professional.
The programme consists of the Canterbury returned soldiers’ championship, a senior and junior stroke handicap, a teams’ match, a visitor’s trophy for players visiting Christchurch, and a bogey match.
