TRENTHAM NOTES
HORSES FOR MARTON
WELL-BRED JUVENILES
ITHE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON,- September 22. Lustra! will go up from Tfentham to Joint T. George’s team for Marton. The others, comprising Alloa, Drachma Trebor, and Beau Vite, having remained at Foxton during, the week. Siglow, Liane. and Twilight. Song will also make the trip. It is uncertain whether Southern Blood will go. P Burgess will ride Lustral, S. Wilson Beau Vite. P. Atkins Siglow, A. E, Bennet Liane and Drachma, W. Doyle Trebor and Drachma (Maiden), and A. E. Lord Alloa. Two of the Trentham lot. Beau Vite and Siglow, will be making their first appearance, being engaged in the Juvenile Handicap. Beau Vite is the Beau Pere —Dominant colt, who cost Mr R. Stewart 900gns at the last sales. He had a run down the straight at Foxton on Saturday, and showed himself a good mover, but he may need a race or two. The Trenthans tracks have bedh so wet and heavy that no real line on the two-year-olds can be obtained. It is possible that he has come on a lot on the firm going at Foxton during the week. ... Siglow is a brother to Sigurd and although that is not a great recommendation, the youngster is promising on what he has done and fairly forward On the Trentham tracks he has a tendency to run about and has speedy cut. but this may disappear on firm Soing. Three other fresh two-year-olds at Marton on Saturday arc Deflation Leighon Rei. and Miss Lelghon. Deflation is a brown colt by Inflation from True Step. Leighon Rei is a bay filly by Leighon from Lady Pam, and_ Miss leighon is a chestnut filly by Leighon from Rule Britannia. Vascones, one of the two*year-oids to appear at Marton. is the stablematc of the Wanganui winner, Pas de Cheval, and in that particular race Vascones. according to the betting, was regarded as much the likelier prospect. However, as she drew 13 at the post there is some excuse for her failure. and she might soon do better. A Select Family Vascones is a bay filly by Gascony from Talari. and ‘ she belongs to a speedy family. She is the first foal of her dam who is by Chief Ruler from Doree by Lucullus from D’Oro, sister to Desert Gold and Nigger Minstrel Talc*<j£)a sister to Princess Doreen ' ascogftf.was bred by Mr T. H. Lowry and was purchased at the yearling sales by Mr W. R. Stead, who has her leased to Mr C. L. Ferguson.
A Derby Candidate
Gay Son will have a chance at Marton of redeeming his failures at Wanganui. where ho failed in the Flying handicap, and ran third in the Guineas s*°, far the form in the Guineas has not proved anything exceptional, bul “ Gay Son is to be considered a three-year-old with possibilities he will have 1? r V, n well. At 7-12 in the Mafton handicap he will- have only 31b over weight-for-age in a field which is no' oy any means up to the welght-for-age standard. Over Country Tfha majority of the runners in the •aeplechase at Marion have been seen •‘ recent hunt meetings and on form _rJJ I°y 1 °y® r and Glenvane will be well Jr®P° r ted, but Black Man should make patters-interesting. He is a newcomer PSteeplechasing. but the Marton gees are not difficult, and his recent gfc.over hurdles has been goc." 1 fov the average cross countx’y Alloa ran a fair race in the 2J®es at Foxton. and he should im£7* with the experience. With A in th.e saddle the Improvement
may be sufficient to make him one of the most difficult.
Two Waikato horses racing at Marton are Sinking Fund and Philemup. Neither has raced since the Winter. Sinking Fund has raced several times over hurdles without success, but Philemup at this last start, was third to Raceline and Silver Glow over nine furlongs at the Matamata July meeting. Two more stallions have been selected for service under the remounts engagement scheme. Kiosk will do the Wairarapa district and Spear Dance has been chosen for the Waitaki district

TROTTING NOTES
A Reminder Acceptances for the Methven meeting will close on Monday. Answer to Correspondent Wager, St. Albans. —We do not know and if we did we should not be allowed to give the information in these columns. Apply to New Brighton Trotting Club. Wellington Trotting Club The good list of acceptances received for the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow gives pro-, mise of first-class sport, and though the meeting is only second in importance to the October fixture the fields are good enough to suggest that the Wellington Club is now on its feet and may with confidence look to further progress. The acceptances showed a very small percentage of defections. Though Fine Art, Doubt, and Repeal declined their engageihents in- the principal events of the day. Princess Beverley and Billy Sunday were the only withdrawals from the unhoppled trotters’ events. Bollard Memorial In the Bollard Memorial Handicap is an evenly balanced field of nine horses, and of these Philario and Twenty Grand will be bracketed on the totalisator. Dark .Hazard ran a really good race in the Lightning Handicap on the' third day of the August, meeting at Addington, and though he was narrowly beaten by Don dr. after registering 3fnin 17 4-3 sec for a. Utile and a .half, his prospects nt>w look bright. He is a good, solid pader, and while he claims an engagement later in the day the principal event should be his mission. Philario and Twentv Grand have apparently not yet struck form, but Marlene is a mare full of possibilities,' and, coming from the strong C, S. Donald stable, she will have friends. Three Bells, from J. J. Kennerley’s stable, has several smart performances to his credit, and he will be racing over his favourite distance. The form of the Auckland pacer, Bexley Girl, is not generally known, but When trained in Canterbury she gave every promise. She is in F. J. Smith s stable.
From Yaldhurst Silver Grattan and Palomar are two young pacers in R. B, Berry’s stable, and at the Westport , Jockey Club’s meeting at Biccarton both performed with credit. They may have improved a good deal in the meantime, and the former especially may be expected to do well.
Three-year-olds A race of wide interest will be the Wellington Stakes for three-year-olds, and while two of the cracks in Bedrock and Special Edition will not be starters the race may provide some indication for the New Zealand Derby. Aldershot at present is a warm favourite. and his good second in the Sapling Stakes suggests him a winner. He may not be a really high-class colt, but the opposition, on form shown, is not particularly strong. Rosalind Maid and Virginia Girl, from Roydon Lodge, Will be bracketed, and the former, by running fourth at the Westport meeting at Riccartdn, gave promise of still better things to come. Her promise may be redeemed in the three-year-old race at Hutt Park. Zingarrie has not done all that was expected of him, but he will be improved by the experience he has had, and Centaurus is a thfee-year-old that is bound to develop. He is owned by the Wellington sportsman, Mr S. W. Kelly, who will be anxious to score a win on his home track. Aldershot appears to be the outstanding three-year-old engaged, but he has a mind of his own and must be in racing humour to win this race. Revision, by Jack PottsOlive Turmoil, may be the one to cause a. surprise in this race. Attempt on Record At the Auckland matinee meeting on October 1 the .unhoppled pacer, Nervie’s Last, will try to lower his record of 2min 4 2-ssec put up at the same fixture last year. In that effort Nervie's Last was paced separate halvqfe by Lucky. Love and Charterig Bay. but galloping pacemakers will be provided in the next attempt. Should the grass not be considered favourable for the purpose, Nervie’s Last will make his attempt on the dirt track.
GOOD HACKS PROMOTE THEMSELVES
A NEW ZEALAND CLP FANCY fßy Carbine.) Five horses who had become known as good hacks won in open company at meetings which opened last weekend. They were Happy Landing and Jazz Boy at Foxton, and Royevrus,
Kena. and Tidewaiter at Avondale. Royevrus is a solidly-built horse by the Wellington Cup Winner Surveyor, but short races are likely to suit him better than long ones. Jazz Boy. by Arausio, will not be expected by many to stay, but he finishes his six furlong "haces so strongly that he may go a good mile. Hq is a descendant of the Gold Reef mare Rangiao, and therefore is related to Elocution, who Was good. Poi Girl, the dam of Jazz Boy, is by Cockpit from Hula Girl, by Demosthenes from Rangiao. Kena and Tidewaiter have mastered middle distances, and Tidewaiter may prove himself the better stayer of the two. Already he is regarded as one possessing a good chance in the New Zealand Cup.
Happy Landing, winner of the Gold Cup at Foxton, beat a fair stayer, Quadroon, and in the last furlong the pair ran right away from the rest of the field. Happy Landing’s performance was suggestive of a,, good future. He is bred to stay, by Siegfried, sire of the Melbourne Cup winner, Wotan, from Tresslda, dnm of the New Zealand Derby winner, Runnymede, and of Simba and Raasau.
