OKAIN’S BAY ROAD BOARD
MR H, THACKER APPOINTED CHAIRMAN
Mr H. Thacker was elected chairman at a meeting of the Okain’s Bay Road Board. Members present were— Messrs Thacker, F. G. Harris, R. Craw, and V. Craw.
A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr F. W. Harris.
The returning officer reported having taken steps to fill the vacancy caused by Mr W. Robinson leaving the district. Mr P. E. Moore was subsequently elected to fill the vacancy. It was decided that as no application had been received for the position of ranger that all owners of straying stock be- prosecuted. Mr C. E. Pope, of Port Levy, was appointed foreman subject to his agreement to certain conditions. He will start, duties on October 3. Mr C. R. Mason was appointed wharfinger. An application from the Pigeon Bay Road Board for the loan of a' piledriver was granted. The financial statement showed;— Receipts £2 10s sd. accounts for payment £195 6s lid, debit £427 10s 3d.

RACE
PUPILS OF BARRY’S BAY
SCHOOL
Pupils of the Barry’s Bay School recently held their annual harriers’ race for the cup given by Mr T. Stewart. Ten took part. The course was from Onawe wharf to the school. Messrs T. W. Weir and H. Harwood were the handicappers. The results were: Albert Stewart (scr) 1, Rodney Weir (15yds) 2, Derek Weir (75yds) 3. Albert Stewart won the race last year. Mr L. Giddens gave a prize for second.

Forty-three candidates for confirmation werTT presented at St. Peter’s Church, Akaroa, when Bishop WestWatson took the service. After an address to the candidates, special prayers were said for peace. There was a very large congregation from all parts of the parish.

CULVERDEN CLUB’S RESULTS
An eclectic match played recently by the Culverden Golf Club was won by W. Lake in the seniors and C. J. Crothall in the juniors. The following are the results: —Seniors; W. Lake 36, 5—31; R. Maw 43, 9—34; G. Cochrane 44, 7—37. Juniors: C. J. Crothall net 36, R. M. Thomson net 37. The button was won by L. Taylor. The following are the results of a mixed foursome played recently:—D. EXPENDITURE ON BOOKS
FOR LIBRARY
The chairman (Mr J. H. W. McDougall) presided at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi School Committee., when a deputation from the Kaiapoi School Old Scholars’ Association attended the meeting about the expenditure of the association’s grant of i. 15 made to the school library fund. It was decided to advise the deputation that parts of the grant up to the full extent of the Government subsidy had been spent each year since 1935, and that the present years pur--chases were due to be made this month. The headmaster reported that the present roll number was 307. Th® tendance was still adversely affected by measles, but not to any great exit was decided to write thanking the Kaiapoi Borough Council for its offer to give part of the rifle range reserve for the planting of trees by the school children,to commemorate the New Zealand centennial in 1940. Mr W H. Stark, president of the Kaiapoi Old Scholars’ Association, reported that the association proposed to give a cup to encourage swimming among the younger children.

ALLOCATION OF PENSIONS DISCUSSED
The allocation of pensions was discussed at the monthly meeting of the executive committee of the Kaiapoi branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Dissatisfaction was expressed about the treatment said to have been given to two members of the branch whose pensions had been reduced. LECTURE GIVEN IN AID
OF FUNDS
At the invitation of the Ladies’ Guild of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Kaiapoi, a lecture illustrated with moving pictures was given by Mr and Mrs H. F. Herbert (Christchurch) in the church on Tuesday evening in aid of the church funds. Mr Herbert gave a description of the pictures screened, which included the Coronation celebrations, the industrial centres of England, and a trip through Canada. , . The Rev. N. J. Stevenson thanked Mr and Mrs Herbert for their assistance to the church.
KAIAPOI CHURCH SOCIAL
A "mad hatters” social in aid of the flower show of St. Bartholomew’s Church, Kaiapoi, wps held on Monday evening, when an enjoyable time was spent in dancing to music played by Mr A. O. Eyles, with extras by Mrs T. M. Curnow. The headdresses were judged by Mrs H. W. Harris, who awarded the prizes to Mrs M. Greenwood and Mr J. Jones. Mr J. Jones was the master of ceremonies.

The Loyal Trafalgar Druids’ Lodge, Kaiapoi, entertained members of visiting lodges at a social evening in the Orange Hall, Kaiapoi. on Tuesday when representatives were present from the Oak of Sydenham, Hope of Amberley, Mistletoe No. 3, and Timaru Lodges. > . The visitors were entertained by the A.D. (Bro. I. Richardson) and a pleasant time was spent in community singing and games. Musical items were given by Messrs A. O. Eyles and H. Fowler.
PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE AT HORORATA
A progressive euchre party was held in the Hororata hall, under the auspices of the School Committee to raise funds lor prizes and a Christmas tree. Prizes were awarded as follows: — Women: Mrs McLean 1, Mrs A. Oliver 2; consolation, Mrs Banks. Men. Mr Colin Keith 1, Mr L. Wells 2; consolation, Mr Hill. Mr W. O. Gray was master of ceremonies.

MATCHES AT HAPUKU
Some very Interesting and enjoyable games of basketball were played on the Hapuku grounds. Teams from Oaro and Parnassus played against the Kaikoura were:—Rovers A beat Parnassus, 21-3 (referee. Miss Leigh); Rovers B beat Oaro. 15-6 (Miss D. Eaton); Kaikoura beat Parnassus, 12-6 (Miss Leigh).
The Kaikoura basketball team travelled to Waiau and played the Walau team on the school court. Kaikoura won by 12 points do 8 after an interesting game. Mrs R. E. Grant was referee. The visitors were entertained by the local club at a dance in the Walau. HaU. Music was played by the Waiau , Band. Mr A. McClelland was master of ceremonies.

The weekly shoot of. the' West Melton Miniature Rifle Club was held recently, when the trophy and medal were won by S Calder. who also won the junior button. The senior button was won by R. The Lynton-Charwell Forks Women’s Institute held its annual dance in Mr D. M. Ross’s woolshed at Ferhleigh, Kaikoura. -There was a very large attendance. Including visitors and members of other branches. Music was played by Mr F. Taylor’s Rhythm Band, and,extras by. Mrs R. G. Johnston. Mr L. Weavers was master of ceremonies. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss E. Lanyon and Mr P. Gillett, and the lucky spot by Miss West (Rangiora) and Mr Vincent Hare.
Mrs A. C. Scott, for members, presented Mrs E. E. Weavers (president) with a bouquet.
