MESSAGE FROM MINISTER
SCHOOL CONFERENCE APPRECIATION OF WORK The fifth annual conference of the Dominion Federation-of School Committee's Associations was officially opened in the City Council Chamber last evening by the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane). Mr Macfarlane welcomed the delegates from other parts of the country, and paid a tribute to the work of school committees. The Minister for Education (the Hon. P. Praser) was represented by Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P. Mr Fraser sent a' telegram expressing appreciation of the work of the committees. Other guests were Dr. J. Hight, Rector of Canterbury University College, and Messrs G. W. Armitage, chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, J. G. Poison, principal of the Christchurch Training College, C. G. M. Boyce, president of the Headmasters. Association, C. W. Allard, president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Teachers' Institute, and W. T. Langley, president of the Canterbury School Committees* Association. . Mr McCombs referred to the school committees as a necessary link between the education system and the community. It was the hope of the Government, he added, to make the country schools in particular ' into centres of community life, associated with the development of adult education.
