Borlase. T, Barr, Saunders, Pollock, J. Hayea, R. Smith, A. Golding, P. Roselri, and J. Mathewson, and Miss H.- Stowell. < Messrs Blair, S. Strachan, Mitchell, and the secretary were instructed to inquire into the possibility of bringing a Christchurch pipe band to Westport for the Hogmanay ball on December 30 at Westport. It was decided, because no sports were to be held at port on Labour Day, to defer the visit of a Nelson pipe band and concert party, set down for October 21. Dr. J. Nicol, of Wellington, and ; formerly of Westport, was appointed a ' life member of the society. RUGBY FOOTBALL RESULTS OF MATCHES AT HOKITIKA Playing on Cass square, Hokitika, on Saturday afternoon, Excelsior third grade beat Old Boys (Westport) third grade by 9 points to 3, in a Rugby football match. For the winners, \V. Ross, W. Ross, and C. Atkinson scored unconverted tries. Mr D. Smart was referee. A junior game, between Kokatahi .and White Star (Westport) was won by Kokatahi by 17 points to 5. Rain started to fall about "midday and increased to a heavy downpour during the afternoon. The two senior games set down to be played had to be cancelled. ANNUAL GAMES WANTED WITH CANTERBURY DISCUSSION BY BULLER UNION j

The possibility of establishing regular home and home fixtures with Canterbury was mentioned by Mr W. Craddock (secretary of the Buller Rugby Union) at the weekly meeting of the management committee on Monday evening. Mr Craddock, who was manager of the Buller team which visited Christchurch last Saturday, said that Canterbury Union officials seemed very keen about the idea. Mr A. Colvin (president) said he agreed that the proposal was a good one. He said that annual fixtures with an A grade union would do much to improve the standard of Buller footban

Mr' Craddock expressed satisfaction with the showing of the Buller team against Canterbury at Christchurch considering that so many of the usual players were down with injuries.

Victoria square on Saturday, arid junior and third grade fixtures will be made later.

Letters of appreciation of hospitality shown to teams visiting Westport were received from the Old Boys' Club (Christchurch) and the West Coast Union. The West Coast Union also congratulated the Buller Union on holding the Seddon Shield for the 1938 season.

PRESENTATIONS AT WESTPORT *

Mr R. Chisholm (Westport), who left yesterday on transfer to Weilington in the Railway Department, was the guest at a social evening lieJd by the Westport Bowling Club on Monday evening. Mr G. D. Campbell tpresident) expressed regret at Mr Chisholm's departure from Westport, but extended to him the nest wishes of members in his transfer.

Messrs T. Brown (secretary), A. Fletcher (social secretarv), R. Hill, P. Struthers, C. Mitchell, A.. Burt, R. Culpitt, E. S. Ollerenshaw, G. Powell, and others present endorsed the president's remarks.

A presentation of a fountain pen, as a token of the-esteem of members, was made to Mr O. McDonald before his departure from Westport to Christchurch, by Mr C. Robertson, at a gathering of the Old Boys' Football Club (Westport). Members spoke of the good qualities of Mr McDonald as a footballer.

OVERHEAD BRIDGE COMPLETED

The overhead bridge at the Kaihinu railway crossing, near Arahura, has been completed, and is open to traffic.

The approaches are very soft and cut up because of the heavy rain during the week. In the meantime the temporary railway crossing is still being kept open for traffic.

OBITUARY MR C. GEAR Mr R. Gear (Westport) has received advice of the death at Gisborne of his father, Mr Charles Gear, for many years a resident of the Buller district, which he left 16 years ago to reside in the North Island. Mr A. Gear (Hector) is a brother, and Mrs J. Chapelhow (Westport), a sister of Mr Gear, who leaves a wife and family of five. MRS E. L. HOCKING ' The death occurred at the Inangahua Hospital, Reefton, during the weekend, after an illness of some months, of Mrs Ethel Louise Hocking, aged 28. of Waiuta. Mrs Hocking was a native of Cornwall, and had been .eight years" in New Zealand. She is survived by her husband, Mr J. W. Hocking, of Waiuta, arid two young children. GOLF TWO DAYS' TOURNAMENT AT HOKITIKA

A two days' golf tournament was held in Hokitika during the weekend. Although the weather was bad, the complete programme was played. The Shaw Cup was won by J. McCluskey (Hokitika) with rounds of 104, 24—80, and 92, 24—70, a net of 150. The runner-up, R. Adamson (Hokitika) finished with 86, 11—75. and 37, 11—76, a net of 151. The best women's net score was that of Miss E. Cooke (Hokitika), 100, 13— 87, and 99, 13—86, a net total of 173.

The best gross scores in the Shaw Cup were made by R. Hay McKenzie (Westport) in the men's division, with

rounds of 82 and: 85, gross 168, and Miss E. Cooke, in the women's division, won a trophy given by Mr I* S. Ross, with 100 and 99,* gross 199. The Tennant Cup" was-won by J. O'Halloran (Greymouth)' with a fine round of 79, 10—69. The trophy for Saturday's medal, given by A.-... E. Perry, was won by D. Gillespie, who played 88, 18-^-70—a good performance. The bogeys (Saturday morning) were won by P. Warnes (Greymouth), who won in the count back from T. Smart (Hokitika), after a tie of three down each, and by Mrs Harper (Hokitika) with 2 down. The women's medal was won by Mrs Caliari (Hokitika), with 112, and the men's medal by J. McCluskey (Hokitika) with 94, 24—70..The mixed foursome was won by K. G. Miller and Miss Anderson, 69, 12—57.
