KENT HONOURS BOARD

SUCCESS OF UNITED DEBATING CLUB FUNCTION AT GREYMOUTH The success of the activities of the club could be gauged by the pleasure derived from them by members and from meetings with other clubs, said Mr S. B. Quintrell, who presided at the annual social evening of the United Debating Club, held at Greymouth on Monday. Mr P. D. Clancy, president of the St. Columba Club, who proposed the toast of the United Club, spoke of the fine performance of the club in retaining the Kent Honours Board for two successive years. He wished the United Club continued success. The following trophies were presented:—McLean Cup, to Mr L. B. Galbraith; United Club Cup, to Mr J. Denford; Kent Honours Board, to Mr R. R. Dawber (for United Club). A long toast list was honoured, and -a programme of musical and elocutionary items was given by the following:—Messrs J H. C. McDonald, T. Learmont, J. Denford, H. Trouland, S. F. Page, J. Sligo. F. McGillivray, S. B. Quintrell, and Stevenson, P. Blanchfield. Messrs P. P. Geddes and F. McGillivray were the accompanists. Community singing was held.

Masters, of Christchurch, arrived yesterday on a visit to his sister, Mrs O. Moore, Preston road. Mr and Mrs W. Judgment by default for plaintiff, with costs, was given by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., in the Civil Court at Greymouth yesterday, in the following cases:—P. F. Pollock v. Mrs J. Brady, £1 ~3s 9d; Grey County Council-v. Robert Blair, £l4 18s 4d; same v. Gustav Hahn, sen., £4 lis 9d,\ Prudence P. Hogan v. Jessie Bell, £5 16s. On a judgment summons, J. McDonald was ordered to pay forthwith to Forsyth- and Masters, Ltd., £7 16s 6d, in default nine days' imprisonment. Walter Kennedy was ordered to pay forthwith to Margaret Lalor £l3 3s 6d, in default 15 days' imprisonment, warrant to be suspended so long as debtor pays' £1 weekly, the first payment to be on September 29. FREIGHT THROUGH TUNNEL Freight hauled through the Otira tunnel last week from west to east totalled 14,874 tons, compared with 13,631 ..tons in., the corresponding week last year, an increase of 1243 tons. The Gael arrived last night from Westport to load cargo for Jackson's Bay. She Is awaiting an improvement in the weather and may sail to-morrow. The Hokitika is awaiting an improvement in the weather and may sail to-night for Wellington with a part cargo of timber. The Omana, if the bar permits, will sail to-night for Adelaide. The Karu is expected to sail on. Thursday, for Petone and Miramar. The Karepo will sail on Thursday for Miramar and Wellington. She will return next week to load for Wellington. The Kartigi left Wellington last night with cargo for Greymouth. She is due at 6 a.m. to-morrow to load for Miramar and Wellington. The Titoki is due at 11 p.m. to-day from Westport and will sail for Tarakohe and Picton to-morrow with coal. She is due to return on Saturday to - load coal for New Plymouth and Tarakohe. The Kalingo left Wanganui this morning for Greymouth. She is due to-morrow to load timber for Sydney and Newcastle. The Huanui is due early from Foxton to, load coal for return. The Gabriella is expected leave Lyttelton on Thursday' with cargo for Greymouth. She is due. on Saturday to load coal ,and timber for Miramar. The'Totara is expected to load, to-mor-row at Bruce Bay for Wellington. The Alexander is due on Thursday next, from Nelson to load for return. The Waimea is due next Wednesday from Wanganui to load timber for Port Waikato. The.James Cook' is due the first week in October with Australian cargo and will load'for Sydney and Newcastle. The Wingatui sailed this morning for Wellington and will return next Monday Ito load for Wellington. The Gabriella sailed this morning for Lyttelton. The Kiwitea, awaiting coal, will sail for Auckland towards the end of the week. The Poolta is awaiting coal and will load for Bluff. Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Timaru. and Lyttelton. The Kaimai is due to-morrow morning from Wellington and will load, for New Plymouth. The Totara will leave Wellington tomorrow with general cargo and is due on Friday. > ■ - ' • • The Kaikorai is expected to leave Auckland on Wednesday and is due to load here next Monday for Lyttelton.
