LINWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB "UNDER AGE" TEAMS ENTERTAINED SOCIAL AT MAYFAIR LOUNGE Members of the Linwood Rugby Football Club have reason to be proud not only pf their club's record in winning six grades in the season's Rugby Union competitions this season, but of the growth and popularity of their "under age" grades. Twelve years ago the club's president, Mb F. D. Kesteven, arranged the first, social gathering for a winning team of schoolboys, and each year since then the entertainment has been held, and other clubs have followed Linwood's lead- ! At this social held last evening at l the Mayfair Lounge about 200 members of "under age" teams and their par-, ents enjoyed the "'high tea" and a musical programme arranged for their entertainment by the parent club, The junior teams have won three shields during the season, and were runners-up in the under seven stone, and their shields were prominently displayed in the reception room, the tables being bright with Iceland poppies and daffodils. The guests of honour were Mrs W. Price, who is, known as the "mother" of the club, Mr F. D. Kesteven (president), Mr C W- Hervey, the Rev. A. C. Watson, Mr «L K. Moloney, president of the Canterbury Rugby Union. Mr E. V, Phillips, vice-president of Canterbury Union, and Mr J. Edmonds, representing the Referees' AssociaT tion. YEOMANRY CAVALRY DANCE AT KAIAPOI The annual dance of A Squadron, Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, was held at the Orange Hall, Kaiapoi. During the evening, LieutenantColonel A. J. Nicoll, Commanding Officer of the Third Composite Mounted Rifle Regiment, gave a short address and screened a number of interesting films depicting life in the regiment. There was also a film in natural colour, showing the presentation Of. the guidon by his Excellency the Governor-General. Amongst those present were Lieu-tenafcf-Colonel and Mrs. A. J. Nicoll.. Mrs Charles White, Dominion president of the League of Mothers, and Mrs Leslie Wail, Dominion secretary, will pass through ChristChurch to-day on their way to Dunedin, to be present at the annual provincial meeting of the League of Mothers. On August 29, the London correspondent of "The Press" wrote: "A ceremony of clothing and profession took place at the close of the annual retreat at Nazareth House, Hammersmith. The Rev. J. Hughes, Provincial, C.SS,R., conductor of the retreat, was the celebrant. Sister M. Martha (O'Neill), Nazareth House, Christchurch, was among those who made Perpetual Vows."" An enjoyable afternoon party was held at the home of the Rev. A. and Mrs Kirkland (Cust) when the members of St. David's Ladies' Guild gathered to bid farewell to Mrs G. B. Nanson, who is leaving the district. Competitions were won by Mesdames T. Jackson, J. Doak and E. Wajland. On behalf of those present, Mr Kirkland presented a rarting gift tp Mrs Nanson. Fifty-f'ur new members joined the Canterbury branch of the Overseas League during the last year, and the membership is now 278. Many of the members live on the West Coast. Nelson, Blenheim and countty districts of Canterbury. These toots were recorded in the league's annual report, presented at the, annual meeting last night, and appreciation, was expressed of Miss E. A. Aitken's work in enrolling new members.
