ANNUAL REPORT PRESENTED

The annual report of the Beckenham Public Library, presented at the annual" meeting held in the library last evening, showed that 487 new books had been added during the year. Of these 352 were fiction, 117 non-fiction, and 18 books for juveniles. The sum of £172 13s 6d had.been spent on books. ' ..

It was noticed that non-fiction books were becoming increasingly popular. The number of books issued for the year totalled 27,718; ; The balance-sheet showed an excess of income over expenditure for the year amounting to £ls 13s lid. Card evenings as a means of supplementing'the library income had been held throughout the year. The City Council, had again granted a subsidy of ,12s 6d in the £ on the subscription income. The library, in common with other subscription libraries, had suffered from the'growth of a number of commercial libraries, and to combat, this competition the library hours had been amended to give- subscribers a daily service. The following officers were appointed:—Patron, the Mayor, Mr R. M. Macfarlarie; vice-presidents, Messrs E. H. Andrews, E. Parlane, W. Large, E. R.. B. Harding, F. J. Dann; auditor, Mr F. Mintrom; committee, Mesdames Clearwater, J. Dawrant, D. Dickie, R. Gowans, Lee, V. Moir, Poskitt, R. Richards, Messrs R. Anderson, H. C. Campbell. R. A. Calder, N. Ferguson, S. Fleming, C. Haines, V. Long, G. Louttit, R. Milne, E. Morse, E. E. Mortimer, L. Newton, R. Sharplin, F. W. Watson, A. Woodsford, and G. Williams. ,
