To play three matches in Auckland, the Eastern Suburbs Rugby League team arrived from Sydney by the Monterey with 16 players, under the manager, Mr John Quinlan. secretary of the club. "We have had a phenomenal season,' said Mr Quinlan. "Owing to the retirement or departure of noted players, we had to reorganise the whole back line. We recruited fine young players, and so well did the team perform that i defeated Balmain and South Sydney in the semi-final games and was just beaten by CanterburyBankstown in the final. That was the best game of the season. Ten minutes before time we led 6 to 4. They got a converted try. and yet another try. Our two five-eighths were absent that day." The captain of the team is Ray Stehr, international front-row forward. Other internationals are Harry Pearce and Joe Pearce. Harry Pearce was the constable who played a conspicuous part in the thrilling rescue of a boy from drowning at Rose Bay at the end of July. „ "The boy got all right later," Pearce said. ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

AIR FORCE TO PLAY H.M.S. ACHILLES

TO-MORROW'S MATCH

Inspired by music .from their own band, which will be in attendance, members of the representative team from H.M.S. Achilles! will play the Koyal Air Force -(Wigram) team in an Association football match at English Park to-morrow afternoon. The team from H.M.S. Achilles has 'an enviable record in Association football this season. It holds the Cole and Home Cups, open to all ships on the New Zealand station, and has beaten both the H:M.S. Learider and South Auckland comfortably '' in recent games. When it is considered that a weakened team from H.M.S. Leander recently held the strong Technical Old Boys' senior team to a draw, it will be recognised that the Achilles can field a very formidable combination. Air Force,-though a reserve senior side, has been strengthened by men recently adopting the code and the team's excellent display against Nomads, the Hurley Shield winner in the English Cup game last Saturday, augurs well for its prospects against the Navy eleven. Both teams play fast, open, and interesting football. ' Champions in All Grades .
