CURRENT NOTES

Mrs G. W. Forbes (Cheviot) returned home on Saturday from Wellington. Mr and Mrs J. C. Irwin (“Fairfield Farm,” Rakaia), accompanied by Miss Hazel Irwin, left by the Maunganui for a holiday trip to Sydney and Melbourne.

Mrs J- W. McHolm and Miss Lorn a McHolm (Lower Hutt) are the guests of Mrs W. W. Toy, Diamond Harbour.

Mrs F. A. Webb and Mrs E. W. Howorth (Invercargill), who have been visiting Christchurch, returned home on Saturday. Mr and Mrs J. W. Beanland (St. Albans), who have been visiting Australia, returned to Christchurch on Saturday.

Lady Angela Dawnay. arrived in Christchurch from the north yesterday, and is staying at Warner’s Hotel.

Mrs Leslie Wilson (Dunedin), who has been visiting Sydney, arrived in Christchurch from the north on Saturday, and is the guest of Mrs J. D. Fairhurst, Papanui road.

Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, Director of School Hygiene, was a passenger from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning. Mr and Mrs H. McC. Studholme (Gloucester street west), who have been in Wellington for a few months, returned to Qhristchurch yesterday. Mrs E. G. Kerr (Timaru) is the guest of Mrs J. Goldie (Papanui road). Mr and Mrs R. J. Thompson (Ashburton and Auckland) have lately returned to London from a trip by private car • through Ireland ' and Scotland. On the Irish tour they were accompanied by their son, Mr Liste B. Thompson (8.E.) of Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Construction Company, Ltd., Manchester. Miss Anne Morrow (Fendalton) will leave this week' for Napier, where she will be the guest of Mrs Streetford Canning for the WhiteWilder wedding on October 1. Later she will visit friends in Gisborne.

Miss Eileen Nutt (Manchester street north) will return to-day from Dunedin, where she has been visiting her sister, Mrs J. Hamilton.

Miss Jean Horwell (Timaru) will •be a. visitor to New Plymouth for the Dominion golf championship next month. Miss Kathleen Newton (Merivale) will be a visitor to Hawke’s Bay for Miss P. Wilder’s wedding at the end 6" next week;

Women golfers in Christchurch will be interested to learn that ftjhss Phyllis Wade, who visited the Dominion with the British women’s golf team in 1935, is to be married to Mr MichaehGardner, of the Royal Army Service Corps, winner of the Army golf championship in 1935 and 1936. Miss Wade .won the English championship in 1934. At Hay’s lounge the members of the Australian Club held a flag 500 party, the winners being Miss Gunnell and Mr and Mrs Huggins. A picture party was also held during the week.

Miss Evangeline Worden, who was at one time on the staff of St. Margaret’s College, Christchurch, and who has been abroad for some time, arrived in Auckland last week. Since leaving New Zealand, she has held a teaching position in the Cevennes Mountains. France,. has taught on a tea estate 6000 feet above sea-level in Ceylon, and has taken a course in storytelling, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

TENNIS CLUB’S DANCE

The Parish Hall at Burwood was decorated with royal blue and gold streamers -for the annual dance of the Burwood Park Tennis Club, held on Saturday evening. Mr J. Liggins (president) welcomed the guests, and thanked them for their support.

The committee in charge .of the arincluded Mrs T. Stevenson, Misses Gladys Wetherall, Freda Southon, M. Wetherall, Messrs A. Milligan, S. Hadley. L. Wetherall, R. Liggiris. Music was played by the Rialto Dance Band; and Mr T. Stevenson was master of ceremonies. Amongst those present were Mesdames J. Liggins, F. Southward, T. Stevenson. B. French, P. Fleete, Edward, A.
