CUTTING DOWN OF
TREES
ACTIONS OF LINESMEN CRITICISED
The ruthlessness said to be shown by the Post and Telegraph Department and the Waitaki Electric Power Board in cutting down trees likely to interfere with power lines was criticised by members at the monthly meeting of the executive committee of the North Otago Tree Planting Association. Members claimed that the trees were hacked down- and spoiled with little thought for their beauty. "The Telegraph Department is much too ruthless in the way it cuts and hacks trees round,” said Mr R. L Banks. “In England wires sometimes go through the trees and none of them is cut down. I have been told that it is the same In America, where the trees beautify the roads. However, in New Zealand, if a branch touches the wires, down it comes and the tree is spoiled.” The chairman (Mr James Rodman > said that in the country power board employees also ruthlessly chopped down branches likely to touch the wires. They gave no thought to the beauty of the. trees. There were also a number of cases where the men engaged in reticulation schemes through farmers’ properties had simply hacked down the trees. The farmers had no redress.
