FIRST AND SECOND IN OTAGO FIFTY MILES RACE
[THE PRESS Special Service.]
DUNEDIN, September 18. Maintaining a good position throughout the long and arduous journey. C. W. Shilton, the Rangiora cyclist, made an excellent dash over the last 100 yards to win the Otago 50 miles road cycling championship on Saturday afternoon, by a clear length from E. Rondel, of the Papanui Club, Christchurch. The winner recorded the good time of 2hr Bmin IGsec, which is regarded as an outstanding performance for the course. A coincidence was that Shilton, who is holder of the Canterbury 25 miles and 50 miles championships, as well as- the 100 kilometres title, was competing in his thirteenth race, and his number -was 13. His performance was also the thirteenth occasion on which he had secured fastest time. A large number of spectators watched the field of 30 riders get away, to a fine rolling start at Green Island, where many private motor-cars followed the field to watch the progress of individual competitors. One mile south of Clarendon the turn was made for the return journey to Green Island, Shilton' being in fifth place at this stage of the race. The main bunch of 15 riders rode together throughout the greater part of the homewood journey, but about a mile from home the field.began to string out. The first six to finish were Shilton (Rangiora), Rondel (Papanui), E. Boyd (Dunedin), D. Smart (Dunedin), K. Jones (Invercargill), and A. J. Lancaster (Christchurch). Newell, E.‘ C. Hall, and N. B. Evans, had joined P. Doherty in the lead, with three of the scratch men, J. H. Newlove, L. G. Fleming, and R.
