SENIOR COMPETITION WON BY CUST
The results of matches played in the North Canterbury Sub-Union competitions ' on Saturday are:—North Canterbury 24, Oxford 3; Cust 14, Woodend 8; Amberley defeated Kowai. The senior competition was won by Cust with 10J points, the runners-up being Amberley with 9i points. Positions of the other teams are:—Woodend 8, North Canterbury 7i, Kowai 5. Glenmark li, Oxford i. The following players will represent the North Canterbury Sub-Union in a senior representative match with the Ellesmere Sub-Union:—Addlington, Elder, Boyce, Streeter (2), Green, McLean (Amberley), Banfield, Cooke, Devlin, Jones, Jackson (North Canterbury), Lindsay, Peach, Stringer (Kowai), Robertson. Southern (Woodend), Stubbs, Doodie (Oxford). ANNUAL MATCH AT RANGIORA The annual Rugby football match between junior teams from the Temuka Football Club and the North Canterbury Football Club for the Kear Hawkins Memorial Cup, which was played at Dudley Park, Rangiora, on Saturday, was won by North Canterbury by 22 points to 0. The weather was warm with bright sunshine, and the ground was in excellent condition for fast football. The teams were:— Temuka—J. O’Connell, V. Green, W. Teahen, A. Opie, A. Donehue, D. Calder, B. Collins, R. Bradshaw, E. Jamieson, K. Leonard, P. Hickey, «5. Hopkinson, M. Scott. ' North Canterbury—-M. O’Neil, J. Cunningham, W. Robinson, R. Withers, A. Small, M. Prestney, R. Le Valiant, L. Ncwick, C. Galletly, R. Palmer, M. Johnstone, E. Pulley, D. Lyons, - J. Martin. Each team played one man short. North Canterbury opened the game with a determined forward rush from which Prestney scored. The kick failed. After about 20 minutes in which each side had a fair share ot the ball, Temuka’s forwards took the ball at their toes, but were checked when their effort appeared likely to be successful. The home side scored again from a loose rush when Johnson dashed over. The kick failed. North Canterbury 6, Temuka 0. Shortly afterward, Prestney scored an excellent try between the posts. Cunningham .converted-- Temuka now made determined efforts to invade the home, side’s territory, and was awarded a free kick which missed. Robertson cleared from a scrum under the posts as the whistle sounded halftime. The score at half-time was: North Canterbury 11, Temuka 0. Soon after play began in the second spell, • Lyons; scored .and Q’Neil converted. ; North Canterbury 16, Te--TOuka 0. Terhuka attacked strongly, “the - forwards and, backs combining* wfell' in a splendid passing rush. The defence held, however. There was a period of ragged play during which Temuka was awarded a penalty. The kick failed. North Canterbury again attacked, and from a line out the ball travelled out to Newick, who dummied his way through the opposing backs for a good try. The kick missed. North Canterbury 19, Temuka 0. Play ranged from one end of the field to the other for a while until Palmer gathered the ball from a forward rush and scored. The game ended North Canterbury 22. Temuka 0. The Temuka Club players were entertained at a dance in Southbrook on Saturday evening, and yesterday were taken for a motor, drive. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ MATCH AT HORORATA A friendly football match between the Springfield primary, schoolboys and the Hororata boys, played at Hororata. resulted in a .win for the Springfield team by 6 points to 3. The Springfield and Hororata basketball teams played a friendly game at Hororata. which resulted m a win for the home team. Miss M. Field was the referee. OUTBREAK OF FIRE AT RANGIORA An outbreak of fire in a hedge fronting the property of Mr J. S. Cook, Victoria street, Rangiora, occurred on Saturday afternoon. When the alarm was sounded at 2.30 p.m. two important football matches were in progress at Dudley Park, about half a mile from Victoria street. Attending the matches were several firemen, one of whom, a line umpire, had to drop his flag, race across the field to his car, and go to the fire. . Only the bottom of the hedge , was burned, the brigade extinguishing the blaze within a few minutes of receiving the call. OBITUARY MR J. KILPATRICK The death occurred«recently of Mr J. Kilpatrick, a well-known farmer of Amuri, Mr Kilpatrick, came to New Zealand when quite young, and followed farm work for a •number of years in North Canterbury. He purchased part of the Achray Estate, which he farmed successfully, until, owing to failing health he was forced to let his property, and since, up to the time of his death, had lived in retirement in Christchurch.

PERNSJDE CLUB OPENS SEASON The Fernside Cricket Club opened its season on Saturday, when a friendly game was played. Twentyfive members were present. The club hopes to enter two teams in the North Canterbury Cricket Association competitions this season. .

Mr F. C. de Lambert presided over a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Cheviot Agricultural and Pastoral Association held recently. The balance-sheet was read and adopted, showing a small credit. Th® association was .in a sound financial position, with more than £IOO m tne A letter was received from the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance regarding the new schedule of rates ana the association decided to protest against the high charge for the cartage of general goods. , The chairman, in making his report, spoke of the successful year the as-sociation-had passed through and the good support given to the annual show. All necessary repairs had been done to the association’s property, and ail buildings had been painted. The date of the annual show was fixed for March 11, 1939. Gorton) presided at the annual meeting of the View Hill Tennis Club.
