A PROVINCIAL CONVENTION

CATHOLIC BALL AT WAIAU

DANCE AT RAKAIA

,: The Rakaia Ladies' Hockey Club and the Rakaia Rugby Football Club held a successful combined dance •In the Town Hall, which was decorated lor the occasion with red, white, and blue streamers, greenery, and spring blossoms. Visitors were present from Leeston, Lauriston. Lowcliffe, Rokeby, Christchurch. Ashburton, Dunsandel, Chertsey, and Methven.

Music for the dancing was played by Colin Campbell's orchestra and extras by Messrs R. Buchanan and B. Anderson.

During the evening the opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mr C.-J. Ryan, president of the Ladies' Hockey Club, who is .leaving the district. Mr R. Buchanan made the presentation. Mr Andrew Doig also presented the cup won by the Rakaia team in the seven-a-side tournament held at .Ashburton. Mr Bruce Doig accepted the trophy on behalf of the team. . Messrs W. Moore and C. J. Ryanwere masters of ceremonies. Novelty dances were won by Miss P. Rapley and Mr R. Buchanan and Miss Daphne Smith and Mr A. Malcolm." Those present included Mesdames L. L. Street, J. WOMEN'S TEMPERANCE UNION

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

The provincial conference of the North and South Canterbruy districts of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held this week in the Linwood Baptist Church, with Mrs H. M. Hall, North Canterbury district president, presiding. Mrs H. W. Robinson. South Canterbury district president, led the devotions.

During the morning session greetings were read from Mrs Hiatt, Dominion president, and from the Linwood "Y" branch.

Motions of sympathy were passed to Mrs H. W. Robinson and Mrs Lowry, and to the relatives of Miss Jessie Mackay and Archbishop Julius. Letters of good wishes were sent from the convention to Mrs T. E. Taylor, Mrs Norrie (Timaru), and Mr and Mrs Pirritt. District reports were read by Mrs Roy and Mrs Woodward. Five "five-minute" papers were given by Mrs Lowry (Social and Moral Hygiene). Mrs J. K. Archer (Pioneer Women of the Women's Christian Temperance Union), Mrs C. R. N. Mackie (Peace), Mrs F. J. T. Grigg (Life of Harriet Beecher Stowe), Mrs Ryan (Temperance). . During this session prayers were led by Mrs J. Richards after the noontide hymn, a recitation was given by Mrs Beilby, and a solo was sung by Mrs Woodward. Afternoon tea was served by members of the Linwood Methodist Guild. Evening: Reception In the evening, delegates were officially welcomed at a reception. the guests'- being received and welcomed by Mrs C. R. N. Mackie, president, of the Linwood Union, and Mrs H. M Hall. Mrs Robinson replied for the South Canterbury delegates, and other speakers were Miss M. F. Havelaar (Christchurch National Council of Women), the Rev. J. D. Madill "(St. George'b Presbyterian Church), the Rev. A. Anstice (Linwood Baptist Church), Mr J. Royds (New Zealand Alliance), Mr E. Clark (Band of Hope Union), and Mr Ford (Rechabite Tents). Items were given by Miss Robertson (violin solo), Mrs Reeves (song), Mrs B. Wind bor, and Miss McAllister (recitation). A short play presented by Mrs Windsor and party was also much appreciated.

Bouquets were presented by the Lin ■ wood Union to Mesdames Hall, Roy, Robinson. Woodward, Mitchell, ana Mackie. Supper was served by ladies of the Baptist Church. Convention Concluded

At the 'concluding session held «>n Thursday, reports were given by district superintendents as follows: "Peace," Mrs J. Richards (North Canterbury),. Mrs Roy (South Canterbury); "Y" work, Mrs Mackie; visits to Mental Hospital, Mrs White; Scattered Members, Miss Blackwell; Cradle Roll, Mrs Faulkner; "White Ribbon," Mrs W. Grigg; Membership, Mrs Claridge.

Officers elected were:—North Canterbury: President, Mrs C. W. Barren: vice-president, Mrs F. J. T. Grigg; secretary, Mrs Woodward; treasurer, Mrs Adkins. South Canterbury: President, Mrs H. W. Robinson; vice-rpre-sident, Mrs Cave; secretary, Mrs Roy; treasurer, Mrs Gillan. Fifty-one delegates answered the roll call, and a special welcome was extended to Miss B. Harband, a former district officer, and active worker for the union. A song was sung by Mrs Donald. Sister Alice, organiser for the union, 'gave an account of her work on the West Coast.

Votes of thanks were passed to the Linwood Union, reporters, the mistress of courtesies, hostesses, church guilds, deacons of the Linwod Baptist Church, district officers, and all who had assisted in any way. A public meeting was held In the evening. Mrs Mackie presided, and solos were sung by Mrs Woodward. An address on "Christian Temperance" 9 was given by the Rev. H. S. Kings, and Mr C. R. N. Mackie spoke on "Peace."

A welcome was extended to the Linwood "Y's."

_The annual ball organised by the Catholic community of Waiau was held in the Public Hall, and many dancers attended in spite of unfavourable weather.

Mr Campbell O'Malley and MissM. Mann ion were assisted by a capable committee. in organising the ball, and music was supplied by Colin Campbell's band. Extras were played by the Waiau Band, and, Mr L. Popplewell acted as master of ceremonies. Novelty dances were won by Miss J. Mcintosh and Mr D. Smith, Miss G. Fitzgerald and Mr C. Thomas.
