NEW DREDGE FOR GREYMOUTH

AUTHORITY TO BORROW £40,000 BILL PASSED BY THE HOUSE [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September T 4. Authority, to borrow up to £40,000 for the purchase of a combined grab hopper dredge and tug is given the Greymouth Harbour Board in a local bill which was passed in the House ot Representatives this afternoon. Repayment is provided for by a special annual rate on the capital value of all rateable property in the board’s district, if the board is not able to mee, the annual commitments out of revenue. _ , . Mr J. O’Brien (Government, Westland). who was in charge of the bill, said that to maintain the Greymouth Harbour in a safe and suitable condition for shipping the dredge was necessary. The board contemplated buying a vessel that would serve the double purpose of a dredge and tug. The bill had been considered by the Internal Affairs Department, the Marine Department, and the Treasury, all of which had agreed that the dredge was necessary to the port.
