COAL STRIKE CONTINUES
HOSPITAL SUPPLIES ARRANGED DRIVERS’ LOG REJECTED BY OWNERS “ f QUEENSLAND RAIL SERVICES CURTAILED (united press association-^copyeight.) (Received September 14, 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 14. The Miners’ Federation has decided that the Rothbury miners, who are not members of the federation but had offered to co-operate, should cease work. ' , . The miners’ president in tpe northern area, Mr T. Hoare said that the federation would see that hospitals and similar institutions in the various States were supplied with coal. , . The only other development today was the rejection by the coalowners of a new log of claims submitted by the mining engine-drivers and firemen. Immediately afterwards their officials summoned aggregate meetings of 1200 members to decide whether “safety men should be withdrawn from the idle mines. The colliery owners made it clear that they were unwilling to discuss the engine-drivers’ log, which is similar to the miners’ log. In Queensland reductions have already been made in railway services to conserve supplies of coal. While the pits are idle the Mount Isa silver mine in Queensland is closing dowii because of the stoppage of coal supplies. The Royal Commission on safety and health in the mines is proceeding after yesterday’s interruption, when an objection was lodged by counsel for the owners against the inquiry proceeding when the mines were not being worked.
