THE LOST GOBLIN
A baby goblin lost himself, Beside a grass-clump tall* And nobody could find him, . As he was very small. He wore a pointed cap of green, , - And goblin-pointed shoe, . His tunic and his shoes were red. His belt and stockings blue. ’ I found him, coming home from
school, But took good care that he Should not look up and be afraid* At finding someone big like me. I ran then, up the garden path. . And climbed the old pear tree. And whispered to the opening bud% “Oh hurry! Open up and free. Each fairy that you have inside, ' The day is early, warm with sun* And there’s great work for all. Of rescue, to be done.” I found a rabbit’s burrow, And whispered down it too, “There’s a baby-goblin lost, . - Is there something you can do™ I peeped into a bird’s nest and.
Though the mother was away. So I told the baby birds. Exactly what to say. I called out to the East Wind, And shoixted to the North, “There’s a baby-goblin lost. In my place, by the fourth. _ “Large clump of cocksfoot, ■’ Near the sixth gap in the The one in which I always hide, My fastest wooden sledge.” The wind went scurrying faster; I saw the old pear tree, .. Opening wide its blossoms— Spring fairies setting free. I saw the mother-bird I’d missed,
Go skimming o’er the grass. I heard the rush of smallest feet, And saw a rabbit pass. 1 did not wprry any more; ;• I knew he’d reach his home, ' And - take a goblin compass. When next-he wished to roam. But when I woke next morning, On the pillow by my head, I found a piece of goblin gold, j Of shining orange red. All other'people think that it’s : Some resin from a tree; j But I know that it’s goblin gold, A goblin left for me. —W.F.W.
