BASKETBALL

ST. MARY’S WINS MUIR TROPHY SENIOR COMPETITION CLOSED [By SHOOT.] Although the senior games have not been completed, it has been agreed to abandon the. competition as the results of the final matches cannot affect the issue. The 1938 championship lor senior basketball in Canterbury goes to St. Mary’s, which will-be presented with the Thea Muir trophy for the first time.

St. Mary’s has come through the competition without a loss, and has found comparatively little opposition. The side, made up of, excellent material, does not owe its success to that alone; more especially is its success due to constant practice, in which it has been consistent right through the season. The captain, M, Scott, and the coach, J, Amy, are to be congratulated m producing and holding together such a fine team. Digby’s was runner-up in the competition. This team, which was expected to be a strong contender for the senior trophy, proved something of a disappointment. The material was there —all the makings of a first-rate team, but it was obvious from the beginning that the side did not intend to take the competition too seriously. Then, too, the team had some ill luck at the beginning of the season, when all of its players were not available. Digby’s beat Technical on Saturday by 13 goals to 9, after a'very ragged game. Neither side was extended at any stage, and the game proved most uninteresting. Occasionally Digby s exerted themselves and displayed some fine passing movements,’ but for the most part the players were almost apathetic. F. Southey who has lately returned from Australia with the New Zealand team, reappeared in Technical’s centre, and in the absence of V. Flood, Digby’s strong centre, E. Turner changed her position from forward to centre. In this position E. Turner showed excellent form and should he one of Canterbury’s most promising players next year. Junior Games The second grade competition has also been wound up and the Canterbury Basketball Association trophy goes to Sacred Heart. In the remaining grades inter-club matches will be completed on Saturday, but the competition will not be concluded until October 8. Section winners have to play off, then semifinals and finals will follow. The result of the Beau Ideal Cup competition will be announced at a later date. It is expected that St. Mary’s will be the winner. Canterbury Representative Games Canterbury representative matches will be completed on Saturday, when the North Canterbury A and B teams will meet Canterbury third grade and Canterbury fourth grade respectively. Mrs A’Court will referee the A game at 3 p.m., and the B game will be controlled by Mr Kershaw at 2.15 p.m. Alterations have been made to the Canterbury third-grade team and the side for Saturday is the following:— Forwards; M. McKeever. E. Moore, J. Travis. Centres: E. McLaughlin, J. Blain, T. Laurenson. Defence: A. Bennett (captain). A. Bruce, D. Summers. Emergencies; M. Hobbs and G. Bring. Exhibition Game To enable the North Canterbury visitors as well as the junior Canterbury players to see the new Empire basketball rules put into practice, an exhibition game, played under the new rules, will be given by the senior. Canterbury team and The Rest. The same E layers who composed The Rest last aturday are required. The exhibition game will begin at 4 p.m. and will be refereed by Mr D. T. McCormick. Maori Tournament The South Island Maori tournament will take place at Tuahiwi on Saturday, September 24. This annual fixture was instituted last year when members of the Pitama family presented the Pitama Memorial Cup to be competed for by the Maori basketball clubs in the South Island. The tournament last year was an outstanding success, and the cup was won by the Christchurch team, Otautahi. The tournament, which is an all-day competition beginning at 9.45 a.m., is followed by a banquet and dance. Entries received to date are Pipiwhauraroa .Tuahiwi), Huia Mai (Wainui), Arowhenua (Temuka), Waihao (Morven). Methodist Tournament Methodist teams from Christchurch and surroundings districts will take §art in a tournament to be held on eptember 24 at South Hagley Park. Games will begin about 2 p.m. and will be continued throughout the afternoon. The Canterbury referees’ match will be played early in October. Whether the game will be played on a grass or hprd court has yet to be decided.
